MAXTOR KICKS OFF INDUSTRY'S MOST COMPREHENSIVE HARD DRIVE RETAIL PROGRAM

Offers Popular 7000 Series Drives in Four Key Capacities

SAN JOSE, Calif. - May 3, 1993 - Maxtor Corp. (NASDAQ: MXTR) announced
today a comprehensive retail program featuring four members of its highly
popular low profile, 3.5-inch 7000 Series hard drive family. Specially
packaged for the retail environment, each hard drive is available as a
Complete Kit and a Basic Kit. Both retail kits are available in capacities
of 130MB, 213MB, 245MB and 345MB and feature an IDE/AT interface. With the
introduction of this program, Maxtor is providing a retail product that is
designed for end users, resulting in more satisfied customers and fewer
returns.

"There has been a dramatic change in the retail market over the past few
years," noted Barbara Nelson, vice president of sales development. "The
end user has become more comfortable with technology and with the
popularity of Windows, the need for storage capacity has increased
substantially. These factors, combined with the growing number of
corporate buyers who purchase computer hardware in stores, have boosted
the demand for hard drives in the retail market."

Complete Kit and Basic Kit

Currently the marketplace consists of two kinds of end user--one is
technology literate and comfortable with computers and the other isn't. To
address this need, Maxtor has created its new retail kits in two versions,
both of which allow simple and quick installation. The Complete Kit is the
most comprehensive hard drive kit available in allowing compatibility for
the wide range of PCs in the installed base. It features the drive plus
everything the user needs to install it, including pre-assembled mounting
hardware, a specially designed adapter board and installation software,
cables, a grounding strap, and a step-by-step installation manual. The
Complete Kit is for users who want to be sure that they'll have everything
they need to install their drive. For users who don't need everything
included in the Complete Kit, there's the Basic Kit. It includes a hard
drive, an easy-to-follow installation guide, mounting screws and a
grounding strap.

"Computer dealers, superstores, aggregators, and mass merchants are all
important elements of Maxtor's channel strategy," noted Nelson. "To target
the mass merchant segment, we have an agreement with Identity Systems
Technology, Inc. as our primary partner in packaging, merchandising and
selling the hard drive kits. We chose Identity because they have the mass
merchandising distribution and marketing support network needed to
successfully address this new market. Their 'family approach' to marketing
peripherals and their broad offering assures purchasers of one stop
shopping."

Service and Reliability

Like all of Maxtor's drives, the retail kits are backed by Maxtor's service
and support, the most comprehensive in the industry. Maxtor is the only
disk drive company to extend all of its customer support services to end
users with a toll-free Customer Support Hotline for assistance with
installation. Also included is Maxtor's No Quibble Service featuring
48-hour Advance Replacement for the simplest and fastest drive exchange.

Both the Complete Kit and Basic Kit feature the same high quality, high
performance and value on which the reputation of the 7000 Series was
built. Additionally, the drives offer full PC/AT compatibility, so they
can be used in virtually any AT compatible PC.
