ASP Announces Enhancements To Award-Winning JetLAN Print Servers

JetLANs support more functions and offer system administrators greater
flexibility in managing network printing

Atlanta, Georgia, May 24, 1993 (COMDEX Spring) -- ASP Computer Products,
the pacesetter in Hassle-Free printer sharing, today unveiled new features
in its award-winning line of JetLAN compact print servers. JetLANs take
the place of dedicated PC print servers on a Novell NetWare network,
offering network administrators improved system performance and greater
flexibility in deciding where to deploy network printers.

"We've been listening to JetLAN users," said ASP president Amnon
Even-Kesef, "and we're happy to give them three features that have been
high on their wish lists: Multiple-segment scanning, support for the
Status & Control options in NetWare's PCONSOLE utility; and the ability to
operate in either Print Server mode or Remote Printer mode."

Multiple-Segment Scanning Gives JetLANs A Wider Field Of Service

JetLANs support up to 40 print queues on up to 16 file servers. With the
advent of multiple-segment scanning, those file servers can be on
different network segments. JetLANs now scan for file servers across
bridges and routers, so network administrators are free to deploy network
printers closer to users without being overly concerned about network
topology.

"It's all part of our 'hassle-free' commitment to users," said Even-Kesef.
"We want them to be able to match the JetLAN to their environment, not
force them to modify the environment to suit the JetLAN."

Administrators also have more choices in how they monitor the operation of
network print servers. They can now check on JetLANs directly from
PCONSOLE, under the Status & Control option. They don't need to quit
PCONSOLE and open the powerful JetLAN Utilities software. In addition to
their own Display Status function, the Utilities provide more detailed
reporting, which includes the selected JetLAN unit's model number,
firmware level, operating protocol (e g, Ethernet 802.3 vs. Type Il),
and--on the JetLANs for HP's advanced printers with MIO protocols--check
the status of the Auto Language Switching and Job Offset settings.)

Remote Printer Option Allows Use Of Third-Party Queue-Management

"ASP implemented Remote Printer for the JetLANs so that administrators
could put additional printers on the network without sacrificing a user
node," said Even-Kesef. "They can even use third-party queue management
programs, which are limited to Rprinter-mode print servers, to control
their network printing."

The Remote Printer mode--even with a hardware print-server device--offers
performance that is below that of Print Server mode. However,
administrators on networks near the node limit of their Novell license,
especially smaller 10- or 20-user networks, sometimes choose to add an
extra printer via NetWare's RPRINTER.EXE program, a
"terminate-and-stay-resident" (TSR) program running on a networked PC.

The JetLAN replaces the PC with a compact, high-performance solution.
Unlike a PC, the JetLAN is optimized with special hardware and firmware
for data throughput. It offers printing performance that is at least five
times faster than that of a PC in RPRINTER mode, with a lesser traffic
burden on the network.

Some print servers offer Remote Printer support as a work-around security
feature on networks that use encrypted passwords. JetLANs, however, have
always fully supported encrypted passwords in their high-performance print
server mode.
