IBM SPEECH TECHNOLOGY PAIRED WITH LOTUS 1-2-3 ALLOWS USERS TO ENTER DATA BY
SPEAKING NORMALLY

NEW YORK, June 29, 1993 . . . Highly acclaimed IBM continuous speech
recognition technology is being shown with Lotus 1-2-3 for OS/2 at PC Expo
this week. In this technology demonstration 1-2-3 spreadsheets are created
and manipulated through normally spoken commands.

"We are excited that IBM's continuous speech recognition technology,
demonstrated with Lotus 1-2-3, has the capability to allow users to not
only navigate through menu options but also to take advantage of our
technology's unique capability to enter information into the application
with high accuracy," said Walt Nawrocki, manager of speech and audio
systems for IBM's Entry Systems Technology.

"This new technology has tremendous potential and we're pleased that IBM is
demonstrating it on Lotus 1-2-3 for OS/2. We look forward to working
together with IBM in the future," said Jim Burnham, Senior Product
Marketing Manager for OS/2 products, Lotus Development Corp.

IBM's continuous speech technology consists of a set of development tools
that allow software developers to add speech recognition capabilities to
new or existing OS/2, AIX and Windows 3.1 applications. Developed by IBM's
Entry Systems Technology in conjunction with Carnegie-Mellon University,
this technology allows end users to interact with computers the way people
interact, by spoken language. The speaker independence and continuous
speech recognition features allow users to speak to their computers in a
natural way, without training and without pausing between words. The
technology provides a dictionary of over 20,000 words with 1,000 active at
any one moment.

IBM's continuous speech technology was a finalist in BYTE Magazine's Best
New Technology awards at Fall Comdex 1992.

Lotus 1-2-3 for OS/2 Release 2.0 is the OS/2 version of the world's most
popular spreadsheet. It takes advantage of OS/2's Workplace Shell
graphical environment and 32-bit technology. Users are provided with
significant gains in usability and productivity, through features such as
drag-and-drop, 3-D worksheets, SmartIcons and multi-tasking.
