BERKELEY SYSTEMS DEBUTS NEW AFTER DARK WITH ECOLOGIC;
FLYING TOASTERS TO SAVE SCREENS AS WELL AS POWER

First Developer to Offer Power Saving Software to Computer Companies
Supporting EPA's Energy Star Program to Cut $2 Billion in Electricity
Bills

BERKELEY, Calif. (June 28, 1993)--Berkeley Systems, Inc., the world leader
in screen saving software for personal computers, today announced the
availability of EcoLogic, a new power management technology, for its After
Dark screen saver. EcoLogic will be offered to all computer product
manufacturers seeking compliance with the Environmental Protection
Agency's Energy Star Computers program showcased earlier this month by
Vice President Al Gore in Washington, D.C.

"People have had fun saving their screens with After Dark. Now with
EcoLogic, there's a fun way to save power," said Berkeley Systems CEO Wes
Boyd. "Also, its natural that Berkeley Systems should take a leadership
position on the issue of saving energy because screen saving is the first
step in power saving," he noted.

The EPA Energy Star Computers initiative is a partnership with more than 70
leading manufacturers of personal computers, monitors, printers and
components to accelerate use of energy efficient office systems and reduce
air pollution caused by power generation. The EPA says office automation
systems currently consume more than 5 percent of the nation's electrical
output, a number that is expected to rise to 10 percent by the year 2000.

Energy Star certification requires that computer products automatically
power down to less than 30 watts when left on and not in use. President
Clinton has mandated that this be a requirement for all computer
manufacturers selling to the federal government, which is the largest
computer buyer in the world, accounting for 10 percent of all U.S.
equipment purchases.

The EPA predicts its Energy Star program can:

* Reduce computer energy use by as much as 20 percent over the
  next decade
* Save some 26 billion kilowatt hours of electricity (enough to
power the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont each year)
* Eliminate 20 million tons of carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere...the equivalent emissions of five million
  automobiles
* Cut $2 billion in rate payer electricity bills

Nanao USA Corporation, a leading international supplier of high resolution
display monitors, announced today it will be the first to bundle
Berkeley's After Dark with EcoLogic with a full line of energy saving
monitors that can cut power consumption by over 92 percent when not in
use. The EcoLogic feature added to Nanao's monitors will allow users to
control the length of time screen saver graphics run before monitors enter
a three-minute shut down phase to a minimum 10 percent level of power
usage. Berkeley says it expects to announce a number of other major OEM
customer partnerships in the near future.

Berkeley Systems will be discussing EcoLogic and power management with
press and industry leaders at the upcoming PC Expo in New York, June 29 -
July 1. The show is attended by many key corporate PC buyers with growing
environmental agendas.

Display Power Management Support

"Power-saving is as important a feature as the equipment protection and the
entertainment value we bring to desktop PC users," noted Wes Boyd. "We
will offer a complete solution for managing displays, from saving screens
to saving power," he added. Berkeley Systems will make EcoLogic a standard
feature in future releases of After Dark.

After Dark is the number one selling screen saver with millions of users
worldwide. Screen savers are considered a PC software "utilitainment"
tool, preventing damaging phosphor burn-in when computer monitors are left
on but inactive. They have also become an appealing form of personal
expression with zany, customizable displays like flying toasters, tropical
fish and screen-munching worms.

The EcoLogic feature added to After Dark will allow users to control the
length of time screen saver graphics run before a monitor enters
power-saving mode. Four stages of power saving can be specified from an
on-screen set-up dialog box. This dialog box also sets the amount of idle
time before screen saver graphics begin.

Computers can be "awakened" in seconds simply by moving the mouse or
pressing any key on the keyboard.

Berkeley Systems has been working with Video Electronics Standards
Association in defining an industry-supported display power management
standard incorporating all the requirements of EPA's Energy Star
specification. The company will participate in a VESA press conference at
PC Expo announcing VESA's power management activities.

"Given the degree of market penetration and name recognition of the After
Dark screen saver, Berkeley Systems is in a strong position to help PC
users utilize the environmental benefits of VESA's Display Power
Management Signaling compliance systems," noted Andres Frisk, VESA Monitor
Committee Chairperson.

Founded in 1985, Berkeley Systems, Inc. is a leader in the personal
computer software industry delivering quality, high profile products to a
growing installed base of more than 100 million users. The company also
offers acclaimed disability software for Macintosh and Windows users. Its
screen saver programs include After Dark, More After Dark, Star Trek: The
Screen Saver, and The Disney Screen Saver.
