NEC TECHNOLOGIES TO DISPLAY ANALOG ACTIVE MATRIX LCD PANEL IN PC EXPO BOOTH
#3760

PC Expo, New York, June 29,199 -- The company to ship the first
active-matrix color notebook computer in the United States and the maker
of MultiSync monitors, NEC Technologies, Inc., this week again
demonstrates its leadership in display technology by showing an analog
active matrix thin film transistor LCD panel for the first time in the
United States at a consumer level.

The analog LCD panel, offering 24-bit true color depth, is capable of
displaying more than 16.7 million colors, and has a 12.9-inch diagonal
screen and maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024. The panel's fine .201mm dot
pitch is the lowest available on a LCD and provides crisp, detailed
images.

To date, the digital drivers of active matrix LCD's have limited the
maximum number of colors simultaneously displayed to 4096 colors and
require special video cards. Unlike limiting digital LCD's, analog LCD's
will plug into a standard video output port and work, much like an NEC
MultiSync monitor.

The LCD panel outperforms some of today's conventional CRT's and has the
same active display area as most 15- and 14- inch CRT's. (Active display
area is measured by the area of the CRT shown, not the actual tube size.)
Other benefits of NEC's analog LCD panel technology include lighter
weight, no geometric distortion, lower power usage, very low emissions and
a smaller footprint. Because NEC's analog LCD panel is on display strictly
as a technology product, time to market and cost of the panel have yet to
determined.

"We're already the acknowledged leader with our MultiSync monitors. And NEC
will be the name in other display technologies too. To make it happen,
we're developing promising display technologies like LCDs and exploring
the different ways the technology can be applied," said Jerry Benson,
senior vice president of NEC Technologies. "The more than $27 million that
NEC Corporation has invested in the LCD plant and additional research and
development is providing NEC Technologies with extraordinary tools and
resources that no other company can match."

The LCD panel is a product of NEC's recently constructed billion dollar LCD
manufacturing plant located in Kyushu, Japan. With the highest production
capacity and yield of any other LCD manufacturing plant (up to 50,000
units annually), NEC is perfectly positioned to become the primary
worldwide supplier of both digital and analog LCD panels.

NEC first established worldwide leadership and recognition in displays when
it pioneered multiple-resolution technology in the first MultiSync monitor
in November, 1985. Since 1985, United-States based NEC Technologies, Inc.
has shipped more than 4 million MultiSync monitors, earned more industry
awards than any other monitor manufacturer.

NEC also shipped the first color laptop computer, the ProSpeed CSX, in the
U.S. in September 1989, and shipped the first active-matrix color notebook
computer, the UltraLite SL/25C, in the U.S. in March 1992.

NEC Technologies, Inc. is a leading supplier of personal computers and
multiple-platform peripherals for the North American market. Product lines
include, award-winning MultiSync FG monitors, MacFG Color Display
Interface Cards, PowerMate, Image, Express and Ready systems products,
Silentwriter Model 95 and Model 97 and Colormate printers, MultiSpin
CD-ROM hardware and ProSpeed laptop computers and UltraLite) notebook
computers. NEC Technologies, Inc. is a subsidiary of NEC Corporation.
