New Massively Expandable, Ruggedized Power Portables

New York, New York, June 29, 1993--At PC Expo, Dolch Computer Systems is
showing the S-PAC, (Sturdy Portable Add-in Computer) family of
high-performance ruggedized portable computers. Designed for mission
critical industrial applications, S-PAC platforms give industrial users
and system integrators extreme latitude for bringing together complex.
multifaceted portable computing systems. Weighing less than 20 pounds
fully configured, the massively expandable S-PAC platform can accommodate
fully integrated systems with 275 watts of power, 5 full-size add-in slots
and up to three system drives. Additional expansion space and power can be
added with the BackPACT option. A new Local Bus option allows power users
and system integrators a significant gain in system performance. And the
track-ball and touch screen options add a new dimension of interactivity
to high-performance portable computing. With expansion capability equaled
only by desktop systems and sporting the industry's broadest selection of
user interface options, Sturdy-PAC finally brings it all together in a
power portable.

Massively Expandable

Dolch Computer Systems is the established industry leader for massively
expandable power portables. The new S-PAC computers come standard with 275
watts of power and five open-slots in any 386 or 486 system. For extreme
expansion, a BackPAC option is available that adds three additional slots
and another 275 watts of system power. All S-PAC models will accommodate
three drives to include the combination of a floppy drive. up to I GB hard
drive, and a 5.25-inch device such as a high-performance CD-ROM or
Bernoulli drive. And all this capability and power, in a portable package
weighing less than 20 pounds, comes with a full-size, 101-key keyboard
(102-key for the European version). "With a Dolch S-PAC, massive expansion
gives industrial users whole new possibilities for highly integrated
portable computer systems ," according to Volker Dolch, company
president.

Field Proven Ruggedness

Dolch portables have proven themselves in military operations in Saudi
Arabia, Afghanistan and Somalia. The monocoque outer shell of the Dolch
design has been thoroughly tested and has passed selected specifications
of MIL STD 810C. S-PAC, with its improved card retention and shock
mounting system, goes even further to assure shock tolerance in mission
critical computer applications. The new rubberized coating on the S-PAC
provides a superior outer surface that stands up well to harsh industrial
treatment. Optional corner bumpers, similar to those used on expensive
military systems, are offered for conditions that go way beyond the
ordinary.

Local Bus

Local Bus improves system performance by allowing direct communication at
full processor clock speed between plug-in boards and the CPU. The use of
Local Bus as a strategy for higher performance applications is gaining a
widening appeal in the power user marketplace. S-PAC makes this option
available on all high-end EISA based configurations. "S-PAC portables are
designed to deliver performance that surpasses even the majority of
desktop systems," again according to Mr. Dolch.

Mouse Emulation

In the ever popular world of Windows applications, and especially in
multimedia programs and industrial real time systems, the ability to point
and click is essential. But portable computing does not lend itself well
to mouse pads. Mouse emulation is the way to go and is available on the
S-PAC series through an optional track-ball system that is integrated into
the front panel, or as an optional resistive touch screen that works with
the simple pointing of a

Best Displays

Dolch, the first manufacturer to ever put a TFT color screen on a portable
computer, continues to lead the industry with the best flat-panel color
screens. For the S-PAC, Dolch has implemented the latest in display driver
technology from Chips and Technologies providing a palette of 185,000
colors on the 640x480x256 color display. Dolch flat panels outperform all
but the highest performance CRTs.

Dolch Computer Systems

Dolch Computer Systems is the world leader in expandable high-performance
portable computers. The company's products are marketed to a broad range
of corporate, scientific, and industrial users in two major market
segments-- multimedia presentations and industrial systems. Dolch Computer
Systems strives to be the leader, not only in performance, but also in
service and support. All Dolch computers carry a two-year on-site warranty
at no extra charge. Founded by Volker Dolch, a pioneer in the development
of microprocessor instrumentation, the company is privately held and
located in Milpitas, California, with subsidiaries in England, Germany and
the Netherlands.

Price and Availability

S-PAC is available in EISA or ISA configurations with 386 and 486
processors running from 33 MHz to 66 MHz. SCSI and IDE hard drives are
available from 120 MB to I GB. Prices for an S-PAC platform start in the
low $6,000s. Deliveries are currently running stock to 6 weeks.
