DESKSTATION RISC PCs PROVIDE PERFORMANCE BOOST FOR WINDOWS NT APPLICATIONS

LENEXA, KANSAS (June 29, 1993) -- Independent Software Vendors (ISVs)
porting applications to Windows NT have reported substantial performance
improvements with the Evolution Series RISC PCs from DeskStation
Technology. The Evolution Series RISC PCs, which are powered by MIPS R4400
and R4000 processors, are being shown by DeskStation this week at the
Windows NT Pavilion (booth 201 ) of New York PC EXPO.

"Our ISV customers are very enthusiastic about the DeskStation machines,
which have made affordable workstation performance a reality under Windows
NT," said Don Peterson, president of DeskStation Technology. "While a
number of manufacturers have announced MIPS-based PCs for Windows NT, only
DeskStation offers the combination of PC compatibility, superior RISC
performance and PC price point. More importantly, the Evolution Series are
available now. We have been shipping systems to NT beta sites since
January of this year. "

"DeskStation is creating a new market for organizations who want to migrate
from DOS machines to workstation-level performance," said Eugene Dancause,
president of Massteck, a Littleton, Massachusetts developer of software
for printed circuit board design and schematic engineering. "Organizations
that might otherwise have considered a high-end UNIX workstations for
better performance now have a much easier, more affordable choice with
DeskStation's RISC PCs and Windows NT. The DeskStation Evolution Series
RISC PCs are the most powerful Windows NT machines available in their
price range, and they are a logical upgrade path for our users. "

Dancause noted that an automatic routing task that took 64 minutes to
complete on a DX2/50-based PC took only 32 minutes on DeskStation's
rPC/44. "Because of significant performance increases, there will be a
strong demand in our market for RISC PC capabilities," he continued.
"Several of our resellers are already making plans to offer the Evolution
Series to their customers. "Welcom Software Technology (WST) of Houston,
Texas, a leading developer of project management software, displayed its
new Texim Project for Windows NT software on a DeskStation system at WST's
user conference in April. According to Elizabeth Kuntz, project marketing
specialist, "Users lined up to test the product themselves and saw
significant increases in performance, which has always been a concern when
operating on a PC. The availability of low-cost, high-performance RISC
systems running Windows NT means that users can complete project
management scheduling tasks much faster."

The Evolution Series RISC PCs are built around a standard full-size AT
form-factor motherboard that uses an EISA bus for compatibility with
industry-standard, low cost peripherals. The Evolution rPC/44 is powered
by a 50-MHz R4400 processor and the rPC/40 includes a 50-MHz R4000
processor, both of which execute internally at 100 MHz. The R4400
processor has twice the primary cache size of the R4000 processor, for
significantly greater throughput and faster performance.

The Evolution RISC PCs come with 512K of high-speed secondary cache, an
on-board IDE controller, support of SCSI devices, and six 32-bit EISA
expansion slots. The base configuration includes 16MB of main system
memory, a 14-inch 1024 x 768 non-interlaced monitor, a 101-key AT
keyboard, serial mouse, 3.5-floppy drive, S3 Super VGA adapter, and 200 MB
IDE hard disk drive in a tower chassis. Prices for this configuration are
$4995 for the rPC/44 and $3995 for the rPC/40. Other configurations are
available with CD-ROM SCSI drives, expanded main memory, larger monitors,
and higher capacity SCSI hard disk drives.

The Evolution Series RISC PCs are available directly from DeskStation
Technology.
