KYOCERA IMPROVES NETWORKING CAPABILITY WITH INTRODUCTION OF NEW ECOCONNECT
CARDS

NEW YORK -- Kyocera Electronics increases the network functionality of its
family of "no-cartridge" ECOSYS a-Si printers -- already the smallest,
most environmentally friendly and LEAST EXPENSIVE (including consumables)
network printers on the market -- with the introduction of the first in a
series of new EcoConnect network cards at the 1993 PC EXPO here.

Equipped with the new card, the 18-page-per-minute ECOSYS a-Si FS-3500A and
10-ppm FS-1500A offer automatic emulation sensing and switching, on-board
Ethernet or EtherTalk protocols, BOTH 10Base-T twisted-pair and ThinNet
ports as well as parallel and serial ones (all "hot" simultaneously and
automatically buffered and switched), bi-directional operation, a choice
of paperhandling configurations, optional PostScript compatibility, a
three-year/300,000-page imaging-system warranty and up to a
50,000-page-per-month duty cycle.

According to Steve Petix, Kyocera's marketing manager, the new interfaces
provide the next step in Kyocera's networking functionality.

"Our ECOSYS a-Si FS-3500A can mean savings of up to a million dollars over
a five-year period for firms with a network of high-speed page printers,"
Petix explained. "In addition, our printers are REALLY easy for a network
administrator to install and use."

The ECOSYS printer, weighing 35 pounds, can be carried in by the network
administrator (as opposed to the leading competitive brand which must be
brought in on a pallet by two installers).

"Once out of the box, the ECOSYS printer (either one) can be placed on a
desktop (again, the only network printer which does not need a dedicated
stand or large work space), plugged in and, thanks to simplified set up
provided by the new interface cards, be up and running in less than two
minutes!"

The ECOSYS a-Si FS-3500A comes in three configurations:

* System I includes two megabytes of RAM (expandable to 18), a 16-MhZ AMD
29000 RISC processor, 146 fonts, serial and parallel ports and a 250-sheet
paper drawer.

* System II adds an additional 500-sheet drawer.

* System III brings the total to 1,250-pages in three drawers (each of
which can be controlled through software drivers).

"The other high-speed network-printer suppliers make the user buy
paper-handling and printer size they may not need, Petix said. "ECOSYS
users can build a system they need now and add to it as their business
needs grow."

Modular options include a duplexer, PostScript compatibility, a 15-bin
electronic sorter/mailbox and a power envelope feeder.

The "no-cartridge," amorphous-silicon (a-Si) technology and LED imaging
system combine for more reliable, long-lasting operation as well as
elimination of toner cartridges used in industry-standard laser printers
-- and the nearly 16 million used ones disposed in landfills each year.

"Not only does using the ECOSYS printer save the environment it saves the
user,' Petix said. "The cost of manufacturing a laser cartridge gets
passed on to the consumer and means a 1.6 to 3.5 cents per-page cost. Our
toner replenishment process for the printer produces some 6,000 pages for
less than a penny a page."

The 10-ppm ECOSYS a-Si FS-1500A shares the same 13.6-inch wide, 13.8-inch
deep footprint (it is 1.5 inches shorter at 8.7 inches) with the FS-3500A
as well as all options and paperhandling features, but comes with one
megabyte of memory (expandable to five).

Kyocera Electronics is part of the $3.5-billion Kyocera Corporation, a
worldwide producer of high-technology solutions in electronics, materials
sciences, communications, optics and solar energy. Kyocera employs nearly
8,000 persons in North America.
