CONNER INTRODUCES CONNER HSM SOFTWARE, FIRST HIERARCHICAL STORAGE
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR NOVELL NETWARE MARKET

LAKE MARY, FL, June 28, 1993 -- Conner Storage Systems Group, formerly
Maynard Electronics, a unit of Conner Peripherals, Inc. (NYSE: CNR), today
introduced the Conner HSM system, the first commercially available,
enterprise-wide hierarchical storage management (HSM) system for Novell
NetWare environments. Conner HSM software represents an entirely new class
of LAN management software designed to automate and simplify NetWare
network administration and reduces server storage costs by up to 70
percent.

Conner HSM software allows companies to establish a cost/performance
hierarchy of storage devices, from hard disks to optical disk to tape
drives, based on rules established by the network administrator for
storing data according to its frequency of use. Users retain transparent
and automatic access to all of their files, experiencing only a slight
delay in retrieving data stored on optical disks or on tap.

Available in July with end user quantity one prices beginning at $7,500,
Conner HSM software enables network administrators to control the
explosive growth of network data. According to Peripheral Strategies,
Inc., the typical size of network storage will rise from less than 10
gigabytes (GB) in 1993 to more than 40 GB per LAN in 1997. Network storage
requirements are rising because of database, work flow, multimedia and
groupware applications, the addition of workstations and through the
accumulation of data over time. Currently, network administrators can move
seldom used files from relatively expensive hard disk storage to less
expensive tape storage. However, once moved files are no longer readily
accessible to the user without intervention from support personnel.

HSM not only continuously monitors disk and file status to maximize
performance and minimize storage costs, it automatically maintains user
access to all files and frees administrators for other duties.

Conner HSM software is expected to provide network administrators with a
3:1 cost advantage over equivalent hard disk storage alternatives and
provide 70 percent more server storage space than traditional data
management methods. HSM software takes full advantage of the lower cost
per megabyte of optical and tape storage systems. While active files are
stored on high-performance hard disks averaging less than $2 per MB,
inactive files are stored on optical jukeboxes averaging $1 per MB or tape
libraries averaging 25 cents per MB. Conner HSM software's high degree of
automation also reduces administrative labor costs.

"Because Conner HSM software was designed from the ground up to provide
hierarchical storage management for Novell NetWare environments, it
represents a quantum leap forward in storage management capabilities for
network administrators," said George Rea, executive vice president of the
Conner Storage Systems Group. "LAN managers using Conner HSM software may
never see the 'out of disk space' error again. Conner HSM software
essentially adds a full-time storage administrator to the staff -- one
that works 24-hours a day, 365-days a year."

Conner HSM provides extensive features for centralized management, control,
security and data protection, including:

* Automatic File Migration to move files to less expensive media, reducing
data storage and administrative costs.

* Automatic File Recall to provide users or applications with transparent
recall of files no matter where they are stored.

* File Server Access Method (FSAM) for heterogeneous DOS, Windows, OS/2 and
UNIX file migration and recall.

* Enterprise-Wide Data Administration for greater control over dispersed
storage volumes.

* Centralized Control for management of multiple HSM systems and flexible
job scheduling.

* Monitoring Functions to track job status, results and reports and for
system notices and exceptions handling.

* Multi-Layered Security and built-in disaster prevention and recovery
functions.

* Broad Compatibility with Conner hardware and software products, other
desktop and network applications, with common network topologies and other
backup solutions.

Conner HSM software is the initial product produced by the collaboration of
Conner and Avail Systems, a recognized leader in HSM software and network
storage. Conner and Avail will continue to develop new and enhanced
versions of Conner HSM software.

Designed to support large NetWare Version 3.11 networks, Conner HSM
software supports 4mm DAT loader systems, such as the Conner 48 GB DAT
Autoloader (Model 12LDAT), 8mm loaders such as the Conner 50 GB Autoloader
(Model 10L-HS) and magneto-optical jukebox systems, such as the new Conner
20GB Optical Jukebox (Model 16L-MO). Conner HSM software is available with
end user quantity one prices beginning at $7,500.

Conner HSM software will be sold through a select network of authorized
resellers qualified for their network expertise, consulting services,
technical support and user training services.
