IBM ANNOUNCES INNOVATIVE "AUDIO SOLUTION BOARD" FOR MULTIMEDIA TO OEM
MARKET

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 24 . . . IBM today announced the Audio Solution
Board is now available to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
market, enhancing its position as a leader in multimedia technology.

The Audio Solution Board offers a powerful, integrated multimedia single
card solution with support for CD ROM drives eliminating the need for
separate cards to run each multimedia function. It is designed for digital
audio processing in home and office environments and provides advanced
audio capabilities in one complete package for DOS, OS/2 and Windows
users.

The Audio Solution Board is based on Mwave digital signal processing (DSP)
technology which has been recognized as the next step in bringing
multimedia capabilities to the desktop computer. By integrating real-time
DSP into non-real-time environments, this board provides OEMs with a
low-cost, easy-to-use DSP-based audio system for DOS, OS/2 and Windows
applications.

The product's open architecture and industry-standard application program
interfaces make it easy for OEMs and software developers to create new
products that take full advantage of the system's powerful capabilities.

"IBM's Audio Solution Board offering solidifies the company's commitment to
deliver products to the OEM market which will establish embedded-DSP
technology as the standard for multimedia PCs," said Hum Cordero, director
of OEM marketing for IBM's Entry Systems Technology group. "By integrating
these important functions into one flexible efficient system, IBM is
making a very powerful and cost-effective multimedia product available to
today's OEM market."

The Audio Solution Board offers MCI-MPC and IBM's Multimedia Presentation
Manager/2 (NMPM/2) compatibility providing users a "plug and play"
capability with many DOS, OS/2 and Windows applications.

The Audio Solution Board's concurrent DSP also offers a true real-time,
multitasking system allowing users to operate more than one audio function
at once.

Because this system contains a programmable DSP, it can be easily expanded
with quick, cost-effective software upgrades versus costly hardware
modifications. No add-on cards are needed.

The Audio Solution Board is compatible with Industry Standard Architecture
and Micro Channel Architecture computers with a 386SX, 16MHz or faster
processor.

Audio Solution Board Functions

The Audio Solution Board's audio capabilities allow a PC to function as a
versatile sound studio providing users with an assortment of options for
sound creation and reproduction.

* The Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), 8-voice synthesizer uses
sampled sound synthesis to provide accurate musical instrument sound
reproduction.

* With Windows 3.1, the MCI-MPC-compliant audio drivers offer wavefile
record and playback at sampling rates up to 44.1KHz in 8- and 16-bit mono
and stereo. Users also can record and play 44.1KHz CD audio in 16-bit
stereo and even mix CD sound with wavefile playback. The system provides
real-time 4:1 sound data compression to greatly reduce the large
requirements of sound without sacrificing fidelity.

* The Audio Solution Board can also run many games written for Sound
Blaster. The IBM Audio Solution Board provides jacks to connect
headphones, speakers, microphone and an external audio source through the
line in the jack. A joystick port is also provided. An optional MIDI kit
provides MIDI IN, OUT and THRU and the ability to connect up to two
joysticks at the same time.
