ADAPTEC INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST TRUE SINGLE-CHIP FAST SCSI HOST ADAPTER
FOR ISA/EISA PERSONAL COMPUTERS

AIC-6360 Provides the Most Cost-Effective Single-Chip Solution To Connect
Disk, Tape, CD-ROM and Other SCSI Peripherals to PCs

MILPITAS, Calif. -- May 21, 1993 -- Continuing to drive Small Computer
System Interface (SCSI) technology into mainstream PC computing, Adaptec,
Inc. today introduced the AIC-6360 SCSI host adapter chip. The industry's
first true 16-bit single-chip Fast SCSI host adapter for ISA/EISA personal
computers, the AIC6360 gives PC, motherboard and add-in card makers a
complete solution of SCSI hardware and software. The AIC-6360, priced at
under $20, also provides manufacturers the most cost-effective way to
build into their products the high performance and multiple-peripheral
connectivity that Fast SCSI offers.

"The intensely competitive PC market dictates that manufacturers keep their
costs down and distinguish their products with added features," said Paul
Matteucci, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's System Products
Operation. "The AIC-6360 enables manufacturers to differentiate and add
significant value to their products with a built-in, high-performance
peripheral interface. With the SCSI interface built in, a PC immediately
can support the latest SCSI peripherals and, thus, the applications they
enable."

Low-Cost, High-performance SCSI in Variety of Environments

The AIC-6360 is the industry's first true single-chip 16-bit SCSI host
adapter that enables manufacturers to implement, at a low cost, Fast SCSI
(up to 10 Mbytes/second) in their ISA/EISA products. Competitors' SCSI
products require additional logic chips, resulting in more engineering
time and raising the overall SCSI-implementation cost. In contrast, the
AIC-6360 is designed-in quickly with readily available I/O environment
software, thus enabling support for the AIC-6360 in the DOS/Windows,
NetWare, OS/2 2.0, Windows NT and UNIX operating system environments.

Multiple Applications

The AIC-6360 is targeted at manufacturers of:

* 386-, 486- and Pentium-based desktop computers and workstations
  that need high-performance input/output (I/O) in single-user
  environments;
* laptop and notebook computers requiring peripheral connectivity
  without a card slot;
* Personal Computer Memory Card Industry Association (PCMCIA)
  ultra thin cards;
* and multi-I/O cards combining SCSI with sound or networking
  capabilities.

Reduced Configuration Time, Enhanced Data Transfers

The AIC-6360's SCSI configuration options are software-programmable,
allowing a PC user to configure the system via the keyboard. With this
feature, the user can configure a SCSI subsystem in minutes (versus the
hours it could take to configure manually). When combined with the
recently introduced Adaptec EZ-SCSI software, the AIC-6360 provides PC
users a quick and easy way to connect SCSI peripherals.

The AIC-6360 supports 32-bit double-word programmed I/O transfers, a
feature that makes more efficient use of today's high-performance
microprocessors to speed up data transfers. This method of data transfer
is up to 20 percent faster than traditional 16-bit transfers, thus
providing a significant improvement in overall I/O.

Compatible with All Popular Operating Systems, Third-Party Software,
Peripherals

The AIC-6360 is compatible with today's most popular operating systems and
third-party software. This high level of compatibility comes from
Adaptec's long-term relationships with operating system and third-party
software developers, as well as with original equipment manufacturers
(OEMs). Furthermore, Adaptec conducts thousands of hours of in-house
testing to ensure compatibility with popular I/O applications running on a
variety of operating systems, multiple hardware platforms and SCSI
peripherals.

Availability and Pricing

The AIC-6360 is available now at $18 in OEM quantities. The chip is offered
in 80-pin PQFP, 100-pin TQFP and 68-pin PLCC packages.

Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADPT) designs, manufactures and markets Small
Computer System Interface (SCSI) host adapters and software for personal
computers, proprietary SCSI and AT-interface VLSI circuits, controllers
for the laser printer industry, and SCSI development systems. Founded in
1981 and headquartered in Milpitas, Calif., Adaptec is ISO 9000-certified
