     The purpose of the program

To teach the principles of double entry accounting using either 'T'
accounts or triple column (running balance mode). Starting with the general
ledger and leading to the trial balance and then the income statement and
     balance sheet.

     Status of this version

This trial version may be distributed freely as long as no changes are made
and all files are kept intact including this one. It may be used in the
classroom for teaching purposes and freely given to students to use at
home. This is shareware and all copyright is reserved by Noel Williamson.

     Running the program

All the files should be in the same directory, including the .EXE file
usually named NSA.EXE. The program is run from the .EXE file. So under
DOS you will type in the name of the .EXE file and press enter. Under
Windows 3.x or 95 or 98 you will run the .EXE file from the program manager
     or Windows Explorer.

     Notes on using the program

Most schools have used the program in a classroom with a set of
computers. High School or secondary school students usually need
some assistance at the start but quickly learn how to use the
software. Students can and do progress at their own pace and the
teacher is able to help the students who need it. Schools are free
allow the students to take a copy of the program home.

Each exercise always starts with the ledger entries. So you need to
move through the menu windows to get to the ledger. Only move to the
trial balance after completing the ledger entries. Then move to the
profit and loss (if there are revenue and expense items) after
completing the trial balance. Finally select the balance sheet after
the profit and loss is completed or if there are no revenue and
expense items select the balance sheet after the trial balance is
     completed.

The exercises are graded in difficulty and add new transactions.

F1 provides context-sensitive help anywhere in the program. An example
and explanation is given for the entry to be made.
F2 provides a general explanation of double entry accounting, the
profit and loss statement or balance sheet.
F3 will save your work (not available on the demonstration disk).
F4 moves you to the next transaction.
F5 will solve the entry for you.
F6 will move you to the balancing or footing process in the general
ledger or the totalling process in the trial balance, profit and loss
     report and balance sheet.
F7 will allow you to view the whole exercise.
F8 will switch off most of the 'Correct!' messages and allow you to
work faster. You may switch them back on again by pressing F8 again.

To enter a date you only have to type in the number and press enter.
To enter a name anywhere in the program you only have to type in the
first three letters (in upper or lower case) and press enter.
