Visix Software Announces Galaxy Application Environment Release 2.0

RESTON, Va.--Visix Software Inc. announced a major release of its Galaxy
Application Environment, a comprehensive cross-platform development
environment for creating large-scale, mission-critical applications that
are graphical and distributed. Galaxy Release 2.0, available in either C
or C++ versions, adds a number of significant new features and establishes
a consistent set of powerful application development capabilities across
all supported platforms, including UNIX, Macintosh, Windows 3.1, Windows
NT, OS/2, and OpenVMS.

Galaxy is aimed at corporate application developers and independent
software vendors (ISVs) who build high-end commercial applications and are
facing a confusing array of operating systems, networks, and windowing
systems when building their next-generation applications.

"Galaxy provides developers with a single-platform view of today's complex,
multiplatform world," said Jay Wettlaufer, chairman, president and chief
executive officer of Visix. "Galaxy is a real breakthrough for developers,
solving some of the thorniest problems they face in creating distributed
applications. That's why more than 100 major ISVs and leading corporations
have already adopted Galaxy."

With Galaxy, applications are built only once, and compiled to run
enterprise-wide on a broad range of desktop and server platforms,
networks, and window systems with no code changes. In this way, Galaxy
significantly reduces both the time and cost of developing distributed
applications.

Galaxy enables developers to create a completely portable application by
abstracting all the system services an application needs. Applications
built using Galaxy are both portable and able to exploit the most advanced
capabilities of each target platform. Galaxy provides a superset of the
capabilities of native toolkits. Instead of struggling with manually
porting applications to multiple toolkits, such as the Macintosh Toolbox,
Windows SDK, Motif and OPEN LOOK toolkits, developers can write an
application once using the Galaxy API.

Features and Benefits of the Galaxy Application Environment Galaxy provides
developers with the following features and benefits:

* A portable, extensible architecture that eliminates the development time
spent moving applications to new window systems, operating systems and
networks, now and in the future.

* A uniform multiplatform API (Application Programming Interface) that
allows developers to avoid committing to a single vendor's environment,
learning multiple toolkits, or rewriting software for each platform they
wish to support.

* A powerful distributed services API and runtime system that allows
developers to easily construct sophisticated network applications.

* An advanced graphical tools layer that greatly decreases the time
required to design and develop application user interfaces.

New Capabilities of Galaxy Release 2.0

In addition to implementing the full depth of Galaxy features on all
supported platforms, Galaxy Release 2.0 adds a number of new features and
significant enhancements. For example, it includes three new
managers--Combo Box, Spinner, and Drag--that each simplify a particular
aspect of application development. Several existing managers have been
significantly extended to increase performance and to broaden their
feature set. Enhanced managers include the List Manager, Preference
Manager, Print Manager, and Resource Manager. Galaxy Release 2.0 now
supports the Windows Multiple Document Interface (MDI) and offers an
improved Visual Resource Builder, the powerful Galaxy tool used to
construct the user interface portion of an application. In addition, the
new release also features an enhanced color chooser.

Pricing and Availability

Galaxy Release 2.0 will be available directly from Visix for UNIX (SunOS,
Solaris, HP-UX, Ultrix, AIX, OSF/1 and IRIX), Macintosh System 7,
Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows NT, OS/2 version 2.1, and OpenVMS
platforms. The C version is priced at $9,600 per developer seat, with no
run-time fees. Galaxy/C++ is priced at $12,100 per developer seat, with no
run-time fees. Current users of Release 1.2 of Galaxy will receive free
upgrades to Release 2.0.
