RAINBOW INTRODUCES NEW MACINTOSH SOFTWARE PROTECTION DEVICE

The SentineEve3 Offers Apple Developers Industry's Most Secure and Flexible
Microprocessor-Based Hardware Key

San Jose, Calif., March 15, 1994 (Software Development Conference, Booth
#1216)-Rainbow Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: RNBO), today introduced the
SentinelEve3 hardware key. Providing Apple software developers with the
most sophisticated technology available, the SentinelEve3 protects
developer revenues by preventing the unauthorized distribution and use of
software programs.

The SentinelEve3's high-tech, slim design makes it not only one of the
smallest keys in the market, but the most aesthetically pleasing.
SentinelEve3 attaches to any Apple computer with an ADB port and is
compatible with PowerBooks. It will also run with Power PCs in emulation
mode. In addition, SentinelEve3 can be cascaded with other SentinelEve3s
and is transparent to other software and peripheral devices on the
computer.

"Rainbow was the first company to introduce a software protection key
specifically for the Apple Macintosh software developer. SentinelEve3
represents a new generation of software protection and it is the most
technologically advanced hardware key in security, programming flexibility
and design," said Norm Denton, Rainbow's Vice President, Worldwide Sales
and Marketing.

How It Works

SentinelEve3 is a microprocessor-based hardware key with a wide range of
capabilities to protect single or multiple applications. The
microprocessor-based protection allows developers to configure password
protected memory as read/write cells, read only cells or
challenge/response registers.

Memory cells can be configured in many ways. For example, they can be used
as time counters for leased software. Or they can count executions to
limit the operation of demonstration products. In addition, memory cells
can be programmed with customer information, serial numbers and passwords
for more developer customized security.

For maximum security, proprietary algorithm descriptors can be stored in
the key. Developers can protect multiple/modular applications by assigning
each package its own unique algorithm. Because the communication channel
between the key and the application is randomly encrypted, the developer
can construct a custom-designed high security system.

Availability

The SentinelEve3 is available for Apple software developers now.
SentinelEve3 Evaluation Kits, which feature a customer unique hardware
key, software and a developer's guide, are available for $39.

Rainbow Technologies. Inc.

Formed in 1984 and based in Irvine, Calif., Rainbow Technologies, Inc. is
the world's leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of hardware
devices for software execution control and protection in the IBM
PC/compatibles, LAN, Apple and UNIX/Open Systems markets. Over 10,000
developers worldwide protect their software with more than 4,000,000 of
Rainbow's keys.

Today Rainbow is in the forefront of changing the way software and
information is distributed. Its VendorSystem Desktop Delivery Technology,
which allows multiple software programs to be "locked" on a single CD-ROM
disc and "unlocked" by the end user upon payment, is the choice of the
world's leading distributors, resellers and software developers including
Agfa, Aldus Corp., Apple Computer, Ingram Micro, KidSoft and more. This
technology allows end users to "try before they buy" and makes software
programs available upon demand, regardless of time or day.
