Digitalk Releases EHLLAPI Component for PARTS Workbench
First in a Series of Communication Wrappers

SANTA ANA, Calif., March 7, 1994 -- Digitalk, Inc. announced today that it
is shipping the PARTS Communications Wrapper for EHLLAPI (Emulator
High-Level Language Application Programming Interface), a component for
PARTS Workbench for OS/2 which allows integration with legacy mainframe
systems by adding visual, object-oriented, client-server technology.

PARTS, an acronym for Parts Assembly and Reuse Tool Set, is the first
component-based client/server integration framework ever offered. It makes
the assembly and re-use of software components from different technologies
a distinct and easier process than creating the components, thus enabling
much faster delivery of applications with reduced maintenance cost. These
components can be written in Smalltalk/V, C, COBOL, or other languages.
The PARTS Workbench is the framework for integrating these components.

The PARTS Communications Wrapper for EHLLAPI is designed for corporate
users who need GUI front ends to their legacy 3270/5250 mainframe systems.
It allows corporate users to easily convert 3270/5250 text screens to
graphical screens, giving their users a clean, intuitive interface without
having to change the host application.

The EHLLAPI Wrapper supports IBM Communications Manager and other EHLLAPI
products compatible with Communications Manager on OS/2. Now mainframe
data can easily be integrated with graphical user interfaces, Smalltalk/V,
C, COBOL, database servers that use SQL, and Lotus Notes.

"Our customers want to leverage their legacy assets by creating reusable
software components," said Mike Arrigo, Digitalk's Vice President of
Marketing. "The PARTS Communications Wrapper for EHLLAPI gives them a way
to extend their mainframe-based terminal systems with graphical user
interfaces, and to add object-oriented capabilities that reduce
maintenance costs and allow them to deliver applications faster. Unlike
other single point solutions that support EHLLAPI, the PARTS component
framework enables integration of new and legacy systems into a single
application solution."

Key Features

* Screen Definition Window. The Screen Definition Window enables a
developer to: capture screens for scraping on or off-line; generate
suggested text fields, add new text, static list and screen id fields with
a simple mouse operation; rename fields; and view field name, length, type
and position.

* Multiple Session Support. Developers can "read" data from multiple 3270
sessions into one PARTS window and "write" to multiple 3270 sessions from
one PARTS window.

* Screen List Browser. The Screen List Browser lists all the captured
screens. A developer can select on a captured screen and view all of its
fields and attributes.

* Playback Mode. The session part has a built in "playback" session mode
which lets developers run applications without an on-line connection.

* Exception Handling. Developers can build in custom handling for unknown
screen exceptions.

The Wrapping Process To wrap an EHLLAPI screen into a PARTS component, the
developer simply follows these steps:

* Establish a session connection with the EHLLAPI session part.
* Capture a screen with the EHLLAPI screen part.
* Generate the GUI interface with a push of a button or generate
a "carbon copy" of the captured screen.

Price and Availability PARTS Communications Wrapper for EHLLAPI, priced at
$995, is available now. Users can distribute applications built using the
wrapper free of runtime royalties.
