ParcPlace Supports IBM's SOM/DSOM Technology for Windows

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 16, 1994--ParcPlace Systems, Inc. today announced
that it is adding support for IBM's Window's version of the System Object
Model (SOM) and cross-platform Distributed SOM (DSOM) to its VisualWorks
client and server development tool. VisualWorks with SOM and DSOM support
will be available in the first half of this year on Intel-based 386 and
486 PC's under Windows 3.1 and OS/2, and IBM's Risc System 6000 under AIX.
This support will allow ParcPlace Smalltalk-based applications to utilize
objects written in other SOM/DSOM-compliant programming languages, such as
C ++. For the first time, Smalltalk and C++ objects will be able to work
together on a single desktop or distributed environment.

"We are pleased that IBM's SOM and DSOM technologies are now available for
Windows. This capability will benefit ParcPlaces' customers who already
build client and server applications that take advantage of VisualWork's
no-cost protability across ten platforms," said Richard Dym,
vice-president of marketing at ParcPlace.

ParcPlace develops, markets and supports fully object-oriented application
development tools for the client and server market. The company also
provides a comprehensive range of services, including customer support,
training, on-site assistance and consulting. ParcPlace's premier product,
VisualWorks, is a client and server development tool based on the
ParcPlace Smalltalk programming language. VisualWorks enables programmers
to develop, deploy and maintain applications ranging from workgroup and
departmental applications to complex enterprise-wide mission-critical
applications. ParcPlace is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California with
development centers in Boulder, Colorado and Portland, Oregon and a
training center in Austin, Texas.
