Mainstay Upgrades MarcoPolo

New Version Features Advanced OCR Capabilities

San Francisco, CA, January 5, 1994 (Macworld Expo)--Mainstay unveiled a new
version of MarcoPolo, their document imaging and management application,
with a host of new features including OCR capabilities, enhanced keyword
functions, proxy archiving, and a variety of interface refinements.

MarcoPolo 3.0 now has an advanced document-centered Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) function built into the scanning interface. Unlike
current OCR software which generate two files, picture and text, for each
document, MarcoPolo's new document-centered OCR composes a single document
that looks like the original and has fully searchable text. This
revolutionary new OCR technology helps MarcoPolo retain its document
focus, providing users a more natural and familiar interface than
text-based document management systems. MarcoPolo's document-centered OCR
system produces documents that are 40-60% smaller than regular scans, and
an even greater space savings over regular OCR which produces both picture
and text files. Plus, Mainstay has added support in the scanning interface
for multi-page TIFFs, making MarcoPolo the perfect application for imaging
and managing faxes received over a fax modem.

The MarcoPolo upgrade also has a new proxy archiving feature, allowing
users to designate support personnel, called proxies, to archive on their
behalf. Proxies archive in someone else's name, using a special password,
avoiding document ownership problems at a later time. Using this feature,
a manager could have an assistant scan some documents under the manager's
name, so the manager could later manipulate the documents. Proxy archiving
also facilitates the creation of imaging stations for workgroup or
department use.

Enhanced keyword support includes an increase in the maximum number of
predefined keywords per field to 64. MarcoPolo can now hold up to 448
pre-defined keywords per document center. Other new features, added at the
request of registered users and as a result of marketing surveys,
include:

* Automatic sequential numbering, which configures document
  centers to automatically number each document sequentially
  as it is archived;
* Enhancements to the Apple Scanner interface such as setting
  templates, the ability to set contrast and brightness during
  a scan, a text tool, and a selection marquee for scan
  modification;
* Export of archived documents as PICT and TIFF files;
* Compression of original-format files when added to document
  centers or attached to documents so that storing
  original-format files in MarcoPolo now saves hard drive space;
* The ability to modify the document archival date when it is
  being archived.

The suggested retail price of MarcoPolo 3.0 will be $895 and upgrades from
the current version (2.0) will be $75. To better accommodate workgroup
pricing structures, Mainstay is now offering a MarcoPolo viewer for $100
that allows a user to search, retrieve, view, and print documents archived
in MarcoPolo document centers. MarcoPolo 3.0 will be available in the
first quarter of 1994 through all retail and mail-order outlets.
