WATCOM INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES WATCOM SQL NETWORK SERVERS FOR NETWARE, OS/2
AND WINDOWS NT

Products Deliver Benefits of True Client/Server Database Architecture to PC
Users

WATERLOO, Ontario, Canada, Feb. 14, 1994 -- WATCOM International, a
subsidiary of Powersoft Corporation, today announced a line of multiuser
SQL database servers for PC networks, with versions for NetWare, OS/2 and
Windows NT. WATCOM also announced standalone, single-user SQL databases
for OS/2 and Windows NT. The new products benefit from the performance and
reliability advantages of 32-bit platforms, and exploit multitasking
capabilities to run concurrently with other applications, eliminating the
need for a dedicated database server.

The new products significantly broaden WATCOM's client/server SQL line,
which currently includes DOS-hosted multiuser network servers and
standalone databases for DOS and Windows 3.x.

"These new SQL network servers deliver the benefits of true client/server
database architecture to a broad new class of PC users," said Ian McPhee,
president of WATCOM. "By removing cost-related barriers, this new product
line enables professional developers, VARs and corporate IS departments to
effectively deliver PC-based client/server SQL database solutions on a
much wider scale than previously possible. These products define new
standards in openness, simplicity, cost-effectiveness and scalability."

Openness and Scalability

Applications using WATCOM SQL can be designed to run without change in
environments ranging from standalone, single-user systems to large
networks with a diverse range of PC client systems. WATCOM SQL uses the
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) standard for SQL database connectivity
as its functional API, providing interoperability with a wide range of
front-end tools. The WATCOM SQL engine provides native dynamic SQL and
rich cursor capabilities which enable ODBC to be supported with the high
performance expected of a native database API.

Simplicity

To simplify installation and licensing, WATCOM limits only the number of
concurrent users, but not the number of machines on which the client
connection software may be installed. The installation and setup is
designed to deliver the simplicity expected of shrink-wrapped software,
reducing the costs traditionally associated with deploying and
administering client/server technology. The self-tuning, cost-based query
optimizer assists in providing top performance without measurement and
tuning by expert personnel.

WATCOM SQL provides numerous advanced capabilities in four critical areas
including:

* Concurrency and Transaction Processing: row-level locking; symmetric
multithreading of server requests; checkpoint, rollback and forward
transaction logs; ANSI transaction model (for isolation levels)

* Security and Reliability: online backup; referential and entity
integrity; comprehensive security capabilities; encryption

* Application Programming Features: bi-directional scrollable updatable
cursors; updatable multitable views; binary large objects (BLOBs);
self-tuning, cost-based query optimization; database compression;
multinational character set support

* Interoperability: high-performance, level 2 ODBC support; NETBIOS or
NetWare IPX network communication support

The NetWare (NLM) version of WATCOM SQL will be available March 1, 1994.
The OS/2 version is scheduled to be available in April 1994, and the
