HIGH-PERFORMANCE 50MHZ MODELS JOIN ALTOS SYSTEM 4500 PRODUCT LINE NEWS
RELEASE

SAN JOSE, CA, June 15, 1992 -- The Acer Group today announced the addition
of two high-performance computers to the Altos System 4500 product line.
The Altos System 4500-50M and 4500-50E, shipping today, both utilize
Intel's powerful 50MHz i486 DX CPU and 256KB of high-speed, level-2 cache.
First announced in November 1991, the Altos System 4500 is the first line
of modular CPU systems designed exclusively for use as a UNIX-based
server, multiuser system or workstation.

Altos System 4500 computers are designed with the CPU subsystem on an
easy-to-install, plug-in board, providing users a simple, flexible growth
path. All Altos System 4500 models containing the i486 SX or 33MHz DX CPU
module can be upgraded easily to the new 50MHz version. These include:

o Model 4500-SX with a 20MHz i486 SX processor and support for a 20MHz
i487 SX math coprocessor.

o Model 4500-33, released last March, which utilizes a 33MHz i486 DX
processor with 128KB level-2 cache and supports the 33MHz Weitek 4167
co-processor.

"The introduction of the 50MHz Altos System 4500 provides us with an
aggressively priced vehicle to deploy in demanding mid-range server
applications," said Mike Heaney, director of product marketing for Altos."
Of greater importance, perhaps, is its proof of our ability to deliver to
Altos customers investing in the lower-end implementations of the System
4500 an easy upgrade path that allows them to maximize their long-term
investment."

Altos System 4500 Design Features

The Altos System 4500 is designed around a highly integrated chip set from
Intel combining the 82359 DRAM controller and 82353 Data Path. The chip
set allows CPU-to-memory data transfers of 32-, 64- and 128-bit widths,
significantly improving the performance of memory-intensive applications.
The Altos System 4500's powerful CPU-memory architecture is balanced by
the use of a 33MB-per-second EISA I/O bus, the latest generation of Altos
EISA I/O controllers and SCSI-2 hard drives. Six EISA slots in the Altos
System 4500 offer significant expansion capabilities for connectivity and
storage options.

"The combination of our new SCSI Channel Adapter and SCSI-2 hard drives
along with the elimination of wait states by the wide data transfers
allows the Altos System 4500-50M and 4500-50E to realize huge performance
advantages over RISC-based servers costing two to three times as much,"
observed Heaney.

The Altos System 4500 executes Altos/SCO UNIX System V/386, Release 3.2
Version 4.0, which is based on and 100-percent compatible with SCO UNIX
System V/386, Release 3.2 Version 4.0. Altos/SCO UNIX features an
impressive package of performance and reliability enhancements. These
include Altos Disk Stripping and Mirroring as well as the unique Altos
SHUTSAVE power-fail recovery utility. Paired with the Altos family of EISA
I/O controllers, Altos/SCO UNIX delivers unmatched performance in
disk-intensive and networked application environments.

System 4500 50 MHz Models

The System 4500 Models 4500-SOM and 4500-SOE feature the 50MHz i486 DX CPU
backed by a 256KB high-speed, level-2 cache memory. The 4500-50M is
intended to serve the needs of traditional character-terminal based,
multiuser applications, and it features the highly responsive Altos
Multi-Drop technology. The 4500-50E is positioned as a network server in
PC-to-UNIX integration and emerging client/server applications. To
accomplish these goals, the 4500-50E features the Altos Ethernet Channel
Adapter.

The System 4500-50M and 4500-SOE also include the following features:

o 16MB system memory
o Altos SCSI Channel Adapter
o 3.5-inch, 1.44MB floppy drive
o 5.25-inch, 525MB cartridge tape drive
o 520MB, 3.5" SCSI-2 hard disk drive
o Super VGA controller
o 14-inch color monitor

Like all System 4500 models, the 4500-50M and 4500-50E support up to 256
serial devices, four ethernet channels, three SCSI channels and 8GB of
disk storage. Support will be expanded to 256MB for memory and 16GB for
disk in the second half of 1992.

System 4500 Applications

The System 4500 will support any SCO UNIX-compatible application. End-user
solutions are delivered by the well-developed network of Altos VARs and
Systems Integrators. These resellers specialize in feature-rich,
high-performance vertical software applications in commercial sectors
including manufacturing, transportation, reservation systems, health care
and finance -- many of which are implemented in popular RDBMS packages.
The System 4500-50M and 4500-50E will support from 16 to well over 100
concurrent users in these environments. About one-third of Altos systems
now combine the integration and service of networked PCs with the
execution of these vertical applications.

Pricing and Availability

The Altos System 4500-50M and 4500-50E are currently available. List
pricing, which is determined by Altos resellers and integrators, is
estimated at $16,700 for the 4500-50M and $15,800 for the 4500-50E.
