Adobe Systems Announces Adobe Intelligent Sensing Language Detection
Software for PostScript Printers

Mountain View, Calif., (June 1, 1992)--Adobe Systems Incorporated today
announced that It will offer language detection software to its OEMs for
Inclusion in PostScript printers. The new Adobe Intelligent Sensing
software operates transparently to the user, constantly examining incoming
data streams. The software reliably and automatically distinguishes
between print lobs in the PostScript language and Hewlett Packard's
Printer Control Language (PCL), and switches the PostScript printer device
to the correct interpreter or emulator.

Adobe Intelligent Sensing software is designed for printers with
multiple-language emulation capability that will be used in networked and
shared-printer environments, where different types of print lobs are often
commingled and sent back-to-back.

"Users in those environments will be able to send PostScript language
files, PCL files, Diablo 630, 'print screen' jobs and ASCII text to a
PostScript printer without having to remember to switch the printer from
one language or emulation to another," said Steve MacDonald, Adobe's
senior vice president and general manager of the Systems Division. "This
technology is consistent with Adobe's strategy of cross-platform printing
solutions, making PostScript printers a complete solution for printing
lobs in heterogeneous environments."

Adobe Intelligent Sensing software supports PostScript language print lobs
and can be configured to detect "end of lob" and "beginning of job" codes.
The new software also can be configured for individual printer ports, has
very low performance overhead, and can be turned off. All of this is
accomplished without the need for specialized software at the user's
system or at the print server.

Adobe expects to make Adobe Intelligent Sensing software available to its
OEMs in the summer of 1992. Delivery dates for PostScript products
incorporating the software will be determined by the OEMs.
