Everex Announces STEP MPFT 2001
The first fault-tolerant and multi-purpose file server designed
specifically for Novell NetWare SFT III

PC Expo, New York- June 23,1992- Everex Systems, Inc. today unveiled the
industry's first fault-tolerant computer system designed specifically to
run Novell's NetWare 3.1 and SFT III network software. SFT III is Novell's
system fault-tolerant version of NetWare 3.1 software which is capable of
bringing fault tolerance to the network user. The STEP MPFT 2001
(Multi-processing Fault-Tolerant) is a completely dual redundant
fault-tolerant system- targeted at the burgeoning distributed networking
environment.

Designed to meet the needs of mission critical applications, the STEP MPFT
2001 provides a continuously available computing platform. A
dual-redundant hardware architecture with two complete processing systems
in one enclosure ensures no single point of failure. Each system bus,
together with its corresponding CPU, memory, EISA module, and attached
peripherals, comprises a system. The two systems operate simultaneously,
one shadowing the other. Maintaining constant inter-computer
communications, the systems monitor each other and provide the
synchronization and coordination needed for fault-tolerant operation. In
case of failure in either system, the functional system continues to
operate. The failed system can then be repaired while the functional
system is on-line, thus providing continuous operation.

"With the proliferation of PCs in the business world and databases being
shared over networks, companies simply cannot afford network downtime or
the loss of valuable data," said Larry Samartin, director of advanced
systems marketing. "Our system gives users the security and peace of mind
of a truly fault-tolerant file server. Spending a little bit more for a
server in a 50 to 100 user network is very economical business
insurance."

The STEP MPFT 2001 reflects Novell's fault-tolerant model in its unique
one-to-one mapping of NetWare SFT III. Everex's architecture negates any
system ambiguity by connecting the dual hardware at the system bus level,
rather than a LAN wire link. This translates into a STEP MPFT 2001 data
transfer rate that is considerably faster and much more efficient than a
system where two separate file servers are attached together in a Novell
SFT III configuration.

"Based on our long-standing support of Novell, we were able to develop a
system where the hardware and software work in concert," said Steve Hui,
Everex chairman and CEO. "Fault tolerant software can only perform as well
as the hardware platform on which it resides. Today few server platforms
have the fault-tolerant capabilities required to detect and recover from
system errors. The combination of Everex's STEP MPFT 2001 hardware and
Novell's NetWare SFT III software provides for error-free operation."

Memory mirroring built into the STEP MPFT 2001 provides for 100 percent
memory reliability and guarantees that all single-bit, double-bit or
multiple-bit memory errors will be detected.

In addition to preventing system loss, the STEP MPFT 2001 ensures complete
data protection through Everex's Disk Array technology. The system is
based on RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks) technology. Everex
uses arrays of smaller disk drives working in tandem to support
mission-critical applications where data access and integrity are crucial.
Utilizing RAID level 0, 3 or 5, the STEP MPFT 2001 offers on-line data
recovery and continuous operation in case of a hard drive failure.

The STEP MPFT 2001 can be used not only as a fault-tolerant file server,
but also as a pair of highly reliable servers in a single chassis running
under Novell NetWare 3.1.

Housed in Everex's cube-shaped chassis, the STEP MPFT 2001 offers eight
EISA expansion slots, ten 3.5-inch drive bays, and a total memory capacity
of 128MB. Redundant integrated SVGA graphics, duplexed tape backup systems
and floppy disk drives are also included.

The STEP MPFT 2001 is priced less than $50,000 for the following
configuration:

** Two UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems
** Two power supplies
** Two 50MHz Intel 486DX/2 CPUs
** Two 16MB memory modules (each expandable to 64MB)
** Duplexed LAN adapters
** Two EISA I/O buses for 32-bit processing
** Two RAID level 3 disk arrays of 500MB
   (each expandable to 10GB)
** Novell NetWare SFT III software

The STEP MPFT 2001 will begin shipping in late summer 1992.
