(New York, June 23,1992)--Setting the standard in teaming 486-based
computing power with local bus video technology, NEC Technologies, Inc.
today introduced the PowerMate 486SX/25i, an affordable high-performance
system designed for graphics-intensive Windows, CAD, and imaging
applications.

Based on the Intel i486SX microprocessor running at 25MHz, the PowerMate
486SX/25i becomes the entry-level 486-based system in NEC's PowerMate
Image series of desktop computers. For users anticipating the need for
increased computing capacity, the PowerMate 486SX/25i is modularly
designed, allowing easy and cost-effective upgrade to 33MHz or 50MHz
systems.

As a PowerMate Image system, the PowerMate 486SX/25i features Image
Video--NEC's first-to-market implementation of local bus video technology.
Image Video empowers users with improved graphics performance --up to 400%
faster information display than standard VGA--without absorbing the cost
of an additional graphics coprocessor board.

In addition, the PowerMate 486SX/25i includes NEC's exclusive ImageSync
technology, which enables the system to sense when it is connected to one
of NEC's MultiSync FG monitors and adjust to the highest possible refresh
rate of that monitor for clearer, flicker-free information display. The
combination of ImageSync technology with 1MB of video memory supporting
high-resolution 1024 x 768 x 256 colors offers users full screen display,
clear and flicker-free images, sharp text and graphics, and superb clarity
with a large palette of colors to choose from.

"Since NEC became the first vendor to develop and ship an implementation of
local bus video as a standard feature on desktop systems, it has been our
mission to promote this technology as the industry standard for desktop
graphics computing," said Denny Lane, NEC's director of Desktop Marketing.
"The introduction of the 486SX/25i, with its impressive price/performance
ratio, represents a major milestone towards reaching this goal."

For users who want to implement multimedia and CD-ROM capabilities, the
486SX/25i is equipped with microphone and headphone ports. The system also
ships with 4MB RAM (upgradeable to 36MB), four 8/16-bit ISA expansion
slots, four storage device drive bays, 128K FLASH ROM, and "hot-loaded"
MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1.
