KYOCERA INTRODUCES ECOLOGICALLY CORRECT PRINTER SOLD THROUGH NEW
DIRECT-MARKETING ORGANIZATION

NEW YORK, JUNE 23, 1992 -- Kyocera Electronics today introduced the
10-page-per-minute ECOSYS aSi Printer, model FS1500A, whose design results
in low operating costs and the elimination of replaceable toner cartridges
-- which have been piling up in landfills at a rate of some 16 million per
year.

The non-cartridge printer will be sold through the new ECOSYS Direct
direct-marketing division of the Somerset, NJ, -based firm for the Direct
price of $1,795, which was also announced today at PC EXPO here.

In addition, the ECOSYS aSi Printer will be available through selected
systems integrators and value-added resellers.

Various on-site and depot-based service plans will also be offered through
ECOSYS Direct, as will printer options and supplies.

The ECOSYS aSi Printer, model FS-1500A, marks the first entry in what will
be a family of Kyocera aSi printers.

According to Kyocera Vice President Gerry Rittenbery, the disposable toner
cartridge found in the industry-standard laser printers have become a
concern for business and individual users.

"The first concern a user has is how do I store the bulky replacement
cartridges," he said. "But the greater concern is what happens to the
used, non-degradable cartridges after I dispose of them.

"Kyocera, which has always had an interest in finding ecologically sound
solutions to business problems, applied its electronic, ceramic and
overall design expertise to create a printer both less expensive to
operate and friendlier to the environment."

The ECOSYS aSi Printer is based on an amorphous silicon technology using
long-life components to eliminate disposables, while producing
high-quality images for less than a penny a page.

An amorphous silicon drum, created with Kyocera's ceramics expertise, and
thin-film deposition technology, is the heart of the new printer's engine.
Other attributes are a compact image-enhanced LED scanning system and
long-life developer and fuser.

Standard features include 250-page paper drawer, parallel and serial
interfaces, one-megabyte of SIMM-like memory (expandable to 5MB), face up
or down output, six built-in printer emulations, 79 resident bitmapped
fonts and 13 scalable ones and resolution-refinement technology allowing
300 x 1200 -dpi edge quality resolution of text and graphics.

Kyocera warranties its imaging-system components (which include LED head
and aSi drum surface) for three years or 300,000 pages and the total
printer system for one year or 300,000 pages, whichever comes first.

A major factor for long-life was the development of a unique toner which
does more than provide the image. The new ECOTONE microfine toner,
embedded with ceramic particles, clean and reconditions the aSi drum
during the printing process.

The ECOSYS aSi Printer's toner is replenished every 5,000 pages (versus
replacing a laser-printer's drum/developer/toner cartridge every 4,000
pages, most of which, even if refilled, eventually ends up in landfills).
And when the ECOTONE container is incinerated the only emissions are water
vapor and carbon dioxide!

"A typical laser-cartridge printer costs 3.1 cents to print a page, while
the ECOSYS aSi Printer comes in at 0.78 cents," said Rittenbery. "Factor
in one of the smallest footprints, roughly one-third the size of the
industry-standard printer, and a host of paper-handling options, and this
is one of the easiest printers to integrate into any office environment."

The FS-1500A is compatible with popular desktop, mini or mainframe hardware
platforms and leading networks. Options include KDPL, Kyocera's
Postscript-compatible interpreter, up to 59 scalable and 87 bitmapped
fonts and two PCMCIA IC cards.

Paper handling options allow up to 1,250 sheets of input, power envelope
feeder, 15-bin sorter/stacker/electronic mailbox and two-sided printing,
all in a modular, stacking configuration.

Kyocera Electronics is part of the $3.5-billion Kyocera Corporation, a
worldwide producer of high-technology solutions in electronics, materials
sciences, communications, optics and energy. Kyocera employs nearly 10,000
persons in North America.
