Barr Systems is First with SNA over X.25 from Workstation to Gateway

(Gainesville, FL -- June 23, 1992) Barr Systems today announced support for
X.25 connections from its 3270 and RJE workstations to the BARR GATEWAY.
The solution is apparently unique in the world of 3270 connectivity. With
it, remote PCs can access mainframe applications via X.25, without the
need for IBM's Network Packet Switching Interface (NPSI).

While several vendors (including Barr Systems) offer SNA gateway attachment
to the host via X.25/QLLC, this requires NPSI on the mainframe's front-end
processor. Host-based X.25 pads typically do not connect via Token Ring,
and cannot also distribute host sessions via LANs. The Barr solution is
believed to be unique. The BARR GATEWAY can be attached to the mainframe
via Token Ring 802.2 or COAX/3299, and the 3270 and RJE sessions are
delivered to up to 254 workstations via X.25, Token Ring 802.2, NetBlOS,
and/or Novell IPX. There is no additional charge for the X.25 software.
Each workstation PC connected via X.25 requires a Barr synchronous adapter
or a Barr synchronous modem.

The BARR GATEWAY is one of the only gateways to support both 3270 and RJE
workstations simultaneously. An RJE workstation is optimal for file
transfers and high-speed printing. The BARR RJE product provides
sophisticated spooling and other printer support functions, including an
option to drive S/370 channel-attached printers from the PC.

President Tony Barr notes, "We intend to support the full spectrum of IBM
connectivity. The X.25 option is an excellent choice for any RJE or 3270
environment where the per-packet charges would be lower than long-distance
or dedicated line fees." In the Barr Systems implementation, those packet
costs have been minimized by eliminating all unnecessary SNA frames, and
by automatically adjusting packet and window sizes to reduce segmentation
of messages.

Barr Systems, Inc. offers a complete line of PC-based host connectivity
products, supporting high-volume printing and file transfer via RJE and
3270 protocols.
