Dallas, Texas, October 15, 1991- NetFRAME Systems, Inc. announced NetFRAME
Live-Drive, the first non-stop drive subsystem that allows customers to
physically replace, add and remove industry standard disk drives without
any interruption to the network server's operation. NetFRAME Live-Drive is
the first and only drive subsystem of its kind available in the network
server market. Customers using NetFRAME Live-Drive can virtually eliminate
network server downtime due to disk drive maintenance and repair.

"NetFRAME is committed to providing our customers with the highest levels
of fault tolerance that guarantee network server uptime," said Carlton
Amdahl, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of NetFRAME Systems, Inc.
"Live Drive is the next logical step in our strategy to eliminate points
of failure which result in lost user productivity."

"As our network storage requirements continue to grow, reliable access to
data is essential to our business productivity," said Michael Williams,
Manager of Networks and Telecommunications of Broebeck, Phleger and
Harrison, a major San Francisco law firm. "We're a twenty-four hour,
seven-day a week facility - our network simply cannot go down. NetFRAME's
new Live-Drive meets our needs for a simple, non-intrusive way to add or
replace industry standard SCSI disk drives without the productivity loss
experienced with previously available drive systems."

Service a Drive Without Losing Productivity

Before Live-Drive, network administrators were required to take the network
server off-line, often during high usage or peak hours, to add or service
disk drives and restore user access to data. The process of adding or
replacing a disk drive is often time consuming, usually involves
disassembly of the server, setting unique jumpers and switches, removing
and installing drives and reconnecting cabling. Such disk drive service
typically requires specially trained on-site service personnel and nearly
always results in lost productivity for all users dependent on the LAN.

Now, with NetFRAME's unique Live-Drive technology, a systems administrator
can service a drive by simply removing the damaged module from its slide
mounted assembly and replacing it with a new module. This capability,
which can also be used to easily expand disk storage, can be accomplished
by the customer at any time in less than five minutes, without taking a
single user off-line.

Security and Data Exchange Made Easy

Because of the ease in which disk drives can now be inserted and removed
from an operational NetFRAME, the Live-Drive also enables a powerful new
way to transport and safeguard valuable data. Customers can now exchange
up to 1.3GBs of data between machines in a matter of minutes or easily
secure data in corporate safes during off-hours or weekends.

Innovation Within Standards

NetFRAME Live-Drive's are assembled using industry standard SCSI-II drive
technology and comply with standard LAN operating system disk mirroring
and duplexing software. Support of such standard features guarantees
Live-Drive customers will be able to take full advantage of SCSI tape and
disk drive innovation.

Factory Certified, Sealed and Guaranteed

Each NetFRAME Live-Drive is factory assembled, tested, certified and sealed
to assure the highest levels of performance and reliability for customers.
Live-Drive is available standard in all NetFRAME computers and can be
purchased as an add-on by existing NetFRAME customers.

Pricing & Availability

NetFRAME Live-Drives will begin shipping in November and be available in a
1.6GB capacity initially, at a suggested list price of $7,995. NetFRAME
plans to offer Live-Drive in 380MB and 760MB capacities in addition to
Live-Drive tape modules before the end of the year.

NetFRAME Systems Incorporated is a privately-held company founded in 1987
by Carlton G. Amdahl, a veteran mainframe computer scientist, and ED
Torresi, co-founder of Businessland, Inc. The company designs,
manufactures and markets a family of network superservers that run
industry standard network operating software. With an architecture
designed specifically for mission-critical PC LANs, these systems blend
the performance, scaleability, flexibility and economy of personal
computers with the reliability and security of minicomputers and
mainframes. NetFRAME superservers answer the capacity and network
management challenges of fast-growing PC LANs and are ideal platforms for
minicomputer and mainframe downsizing.

NetFRAME products are available through 90 Value Added Resellers and
Systems Integrators in 150 locations in the U.S. and Canada. In Europe the
products are marketed by Ing. C. Olivetti & Co. NetFRAME supersevers are
also distributed in all major countries worldwide.
