Palo Alto, CA, May 18, 1992 -- Micro Focus is now offering application
developers a DB2 compatible development environment on a PC, following the
release of the XDB Option for Micro Focus COBOL Workbench. This new
standalone version of XDB's DB2 Workbench is positioned for customers who
desire an entry-level DB2 development environment on a single-user desktop
computer.

The XDB Option consists of XDB's powerful SQL database engine, a COBOL
precompiler and a subset of XDB-Workbench utilities including Interactive
SQL, DCLGEN, and Import/Export. The XDB Option is fully integrated with
the Micro Focus COBOL Compiler, the programmer productivity tools included
in Workbench (such as Advanced ANIMATOR , the visual source debugger) as
well as the Micro Focus CICS and Micro Focus IMS Option.

The XDB Option enables users to develop and test COBOL programs on a PC and
then migrate the completed Program to the mainframe without any source
code modification, significantly reduces DB2 development costs. Mainframe
resources are saved by offloading DB2 development to the desktop computer
environment. Developers can now take advantage of the productivity
benefits a rich PC programming environment offers by utilizing Micro
Focus' user-friendly programming tools and XDB's powerful DB2 database
functions.

"The XDB Option is well suited for downsizing mainframe DB2 applications to
a single-user PC where DB2 compatibility is a crucial consideration. XDB
Systems has made a remarkable

commitment to ensure 100% compatibility between the XDB Option and DB2,"
said Richard McNees, Micro Focus group vice president, business
development and marketing.

The core of the XDB workbench is XDB's powerful SQL engine, which performs
all database retrieval and manipulation functions. The SDB SQL engine
supports DB2 and ANSI standards. The XDB SQL Engine is highly compatible
with DB2 version 2.2, including cascading referential integrity,
transaction processing, backup and recovery, password protection,
concurrency control and integrated system catalog.

Users have the option upgrading the XDB Option for Micro Focus COBOL to the
full functionality of the XDB Workbench, which provides more robust
database tools and connectivity to multi-user environments.

The XDB Option for Micro Focus COBOL Workbench is $1250 and available
directly from Micro Focus.
