TROY, N.Y., June 23, 1992 -- MapInfo Corporation is shipping MapInfo,
Version 2.0 for Windows, a major release of its flagship desktop mapping
software package. The company's new MapBasic Development Environment (see
separate release) for custom application development is also shipping.

Both products are being demonstrated at PC EXPO (booth #4410), New York
City, June 23-25. MapInfo for Windows 2.0 provides increased power and
functionality, while the MapBasic Development Environment gives rise to a
new class of applications that developers can adapt for new groups of
users.

Desktop mapping is a practical, visual way to organize, analyze and manage
information. With MapInfo, organizations can display data geographically
from corporate databases and spreadsheets like dBASE, Lotus 1-2-3, Excel
as well as delimited ASCII files. It is a sophisticated analytical tool
that reveals the patterns, relationships and trends among data that are
otherwise difficult to discern when poring over computer printouts.

An array of new geographic and presentation features available in MapInfo
Version 2.0 for Windows benefits end-users and developers alike:

Key Geographic Analysis Features

Buffering -- With this capability, an irregular area or line is surrounded
or "buffered" at a specified distance. A user then searches for requested
data, for example, all sales prospects within 10 miles of an Interstate
highway.

Geographic Search/Queries -- Extended geographic capabilities now allow
searches on any geographic component, such as an object, line, point,
polyline, ellipse, arc, buffer, polygon; indicate SQL queries for
"within," "contains" or "intersects."

Dynamic Map Projections -- An essential technique in map-making, MapInfo
now incorporates 18 different projections (Mercator, Albers, Lambert,
Robinson, State Plane, Equidistant, among others) and hundreds of
coordinate systems. Projections are used to create and display digitized
or paper 2-D maps without distortion. A first for the industry, MapInfo's
projection capability works dynamically, so users need not export and
import maps.

Key Presentation Features

Layout Window -- A built-in page layout capability is now available in
MapInfo. Arrange, position and re-size graphic elements such as maps,
tables, charts, text, clip art and digitized logos for a page or set of
pages.

Enhanced Graphics -- MapInfo now offers more than 100 line styles and fill
patterns. Create custom symbols easily; choose from a palette of more than
16 million colors.

Enhanced Text Functions -- MapInfo now supports Windows 3.1 Truetype fonts;
rotate text labels to follow streets and other angles.

The MapInfo Advantage

Advance Technology Consultants, Atlanta, a beta user for MapInfo Version
2.0 for Windows, is developing a site analysis and management application
for a major regional gas company that will streamline its operations and
response time. With the new buffering feature, vice president Mark
Fouraker shows buildings, roads, public facilities, wetlands, bridges and
other entities that fall within one mile of both sides of the length of a
pipeline. Associated data for every site is included.

"If there's a leak, an operations manager can immediately tell field
personnel that an office building, a school and park are within the buffer
and advise if children and elderly are likely to be in the area," says
Fouraker. Using MapInfo on laptops in the field, supervisors and staff can
quickly coordinate containment efforts and evacuation plans with the
proper authorities, he notes.

GIS Power on the Desktop

Michael Quinn, director, DigiMap Data Services Inc., Toronto, a geographic
information system (GIS) consultant, is supervising the research and
production for a comprehensive environmental atlas of the Great Lakes.

"This version of MapInfo fulfills the promise of GIS on the desktop because
its sophisticated layout window and new map projections deliver the
high-level output that the project demands," says Quinn. "An encapsulated
postscript (EPS) file can go directly to a printer for color separations
and production, saving many interim steps. I expect to save two-to-three
production days per full-color plate," he adds.

Availability, Pricing

MapInfo Version 2.0 for Windows is priced at $995 and the MapBasic
Development Environment is priced at $795. MapInfo customers (Windows and
DOS) can upgrade to MapInfo Version 2.0 for Windows for $179 until June
30, after which the cost will be $250.

MapInfo desktop mapping software is available for Windows, Macintosh, DOS,
Sun and HP computers. It has a built-in SQL relational database management
system and works directly with popular databases and spreadsheets such as
dBASE, Lotus, Excel and delimited ASCII files. Founded in 1986, MapInfo
Corp. is headquartered in Troy, N.Y. and is the industry leader in desktop
mapping with more than 25,000 units shipped. The privately held company
markets its products worldwide through direct sales, resellers and
distributors.
