WoW!! This is some *NICE* WORK!! Amazing! GeoWorks on a single floppy!! (GeoWorks Lite?)

Only minor trouble during the VERY slick installation program!! I had hidden my "prefmgr.geo" file in the \world dir and it didn't like that! Also couldn't get a few icons to show bur am working on that - all in all - this really makes GW << PORTABLE!!!! >>

GeosPort is not designed to mess with your system. Therefore, attributes of files, including applications will not be changed in order to make the file transportable.
Glad you like it. Slick sounds good to me, but it's a little exaggerated, isn't it?
From testing it over and over, I can't stand the sounds any more.
Anybody interested in a quiet version?
Also, I had one report that the sound didn't turn off at the end of GeosPort. If that's true for more than one machine, I'll take remove the sound feature.

Let's see, sound is not something that GeosPort can add to GeoWorks products.
The sound is a feature only during the installation process from the floppy to the hard drive.
You should be able to install regular VGA. You will have to manually edit the Geos.Ini to activate that driver. You can find the required driver and device statements in the driver file (e.g. VGA.GEO) itself.
To automatically upgrade through preferences, you will need to copy preferences into the World folder as well as additional resources from the Systems folder. Experiment and report. Of the top of my head, I don't remember the required resources but I'll look into it.
As to GeoDraw, I have not identified the particular resources that it requires. Spool and printer come to mind as most important ones. I would look with LIST or another file viewer into Draw.Geo and try to find a list of Geodes. That list of Geodes is a useful guide to the resources.

I apologize for being vague. GeoWorks software is so wonderfully complex that all sorts of configurations might fit on a 1.4 Mb diskette in working format, but I have not experimented with all variations.

This place would be a good forum to share discoveries, and I invite all users to do so.

PastorVW threw out this very interesting questions. GeosPort users may have some ideas to share. I'll be thinking about it.
My immediate answer is that GeosPort can be slimmed a little, perhaps to 850kb but likely not to 720Kb.
Anybody with special insights into RAMdisks?

OK, first of all thank you for a great concept! F.Y.I. I had no problems making a functional 1.44 "boot" disk. However let me describe what I would like to do and then you can tell me if it is possible.
I have a Panasonic CF-150 laptop with one 720k drive and a 1meg, battery backed RAMDISK as drive C. Today I transferred everything over to two 720k disks and set up BAT file to move everything over to the RAMDISK - creating all the directories, etc. Of course I found out that the program looks for all the file son the A: drive - at least I think that is the problem.
I would really love to just be able to run the Planner, GeoDex and the Notepad on this thing - it's so light compared to my other laptop (read portable!). Is there any way I can do this - I don't mind using floppies.
Thanks again for all your hard work!

In the preceding box, I gave you a list of files that you should have for GeosPort.
Now, as to adding files for RayKop to get GeoDraw to work: Try adding the Parallel and Sound/Speaker Drivers as well as the Options Library, in this order.
To add GeoWrite, you are likely to need these drivers also. For GeoWrite, you may need to add the dictionary file which may be too big to fit.
For both GeoWrite and GeoDraw, one of the missing resources should be a printer driver. If you do not plan to print, I'd recommend adding the driver with the least number of bytes. If you do plan to print, use the printer driver you'd most likely need or one that's small but recognized by many printers.
A thought on large resource files that are required by an application but take too much room such as the dictionary, and will not be used: GeoWorks may possibly accept this resource file even if it has been gutted, so that only the header and the end are left. I don't recommend this but if you are extremely adventurous, this might be a solution.
There have been many DL's by now on AOL and CIS and I have received much e-mail on customizing GeosPort. Therefore, a considerable number of people may want to know how you're faring.

I have no solution for loading GeosPort on a RAMdisk. I imagine you could try editing your Geos.Ini file by adding the path before any file listed in the Ini file. This is something I once did to overcome problems with OS/2 2.0 and it helped. Whether it's a viable solution for RAMdisk users, I can't say.
Also, see the minimum file list preceding this note. It is my belief that trying to get GEOS on a 720Kb floppy is not possible. This rules out one of the alternatives for users without hard drive.

Adding GeoDraw to GeosPort Floppy

Add the following files from your hard drive GeoWorks folders to the GeosPort floppy:

1. Graphic Object Library, Import Library and Quattro Pro EPS, for a total of 59,396 bytes, to the floppy GeoWorks\System folder.

2. Graphical Setup of 27,128 bytes, to the floppy GeoWorks\Sysappl folder.

3. GeoDraw of 31,448 bytes to the floppy GeoWorks\World folder.

If you add files, try to delete unnecessary files, especially extra OS-drivers (such as DOS3 in System, and *.Bin files in System\Welcome). Deleting one or two extra Bin files will enable you to add a number of resource files to the System folder.

Well I WAS successful in getting Geosport to run from my C: drive RAM DISK. The trick is to alter the GEOSPORT.BAT file path settings to C: then A:

Of course you have to reproduce all the files and directories on the RAM DISK - since I only have a 720k drive I just used two and wrote BAT files to do the install. I can run the Calculator and note pad from the RAM DISK and the Planner and GeoDex from the floppy.

It actually was simple! I'll let everyone know how it works in practice!

The T1000 file may or may not belong to the Toshiba. I believe that it's a file for Tandy computers.
BTW, I am not associated with GeoWorks and therefore don't know anything about the innards of GeoWorks files. It is my belief, however, that you need the Motif, UI and specific ui files and should not delete them.
I have not found a way to reduce GeoWorks in a functional format to less than 850Kb. Of course, you can freeze the files to half the size the way it's done with WinLite but you will need a decompressor before you can use the files (and I didn't want another lite product).
I half wondered for quite some time if a utility such as LZ or PKZIPLite could compress GeoWorks files so that they can still run. I doubt it, but you may want to look into that.

About file compressors: PKLITE and the other file compressor utilities do indeed compress SOME files and still leave them runable. The limitation is that the only work on the executable files, not on the data files. (Executable files end in .COM or .EXE.) Basically, when an executable file is created, there is wasted space; PKLITE squishes the file down, appends a small header to it, and expands it on runtime. Note that some files won't work when compressed; but then you just use PKLITE to expand them to what they were before. You could also look at DIET, and I think there's another program that does this, too. You could get savings of 10-15% per runable file.

You can use PKLITE (v1.15 or later) to compress the GEOS executable files, GEOS.EXE or KERNEL.EXE, and save space. However, if you attempt to shell to DOS from the DOS room, you will crash when you attempt to return to GEOS.

But the warning is moot, since no one will want to shell to DOS anyway.

First order of business. I have an operational Geos running on a T-1000. After I get it fine tuned, I will list the details, but basically what I did as:
Take the minimum file list and install it on the D: hardram EXCEPT for motif.geo and ui.geo which are on the a: floppy. Change the geos.ini file to read a:motif.geo and a:ui.geo where applicable. Change the screen driver from CGA.GEO Mono to CGA.GEO Inverse Mono. It works, more or less. Notepad, geocomm, perf meter, and a couple of apps work fine. Only problem is that you MUST leave the floppy with the ui and motif in at all times. (at least so far).
Second order of Business. Geodraw, geowrite, Tetris and solitaire do not work. I get a "library resource missing" or something like that when I try to run them. What am I missing?
Third: Sound stays on at what I assume is the last screen because that's where the sound came on and the machine stopped doing anything except scream. Geos port seemed to be installed except for custom stuff that I had to do by hand. DR-dos 6.0,386-sx by KLH,2 meg on board.

From: ClemensKo

Let's try this:
After you decompress GeosPrt1 you should have several files that will be deleted in the course of the installation.
Before you proceed to invoke GeosPort, i.e. immediately after the decompressing, use any DOS editor, but not NotePad, and delete the last number on the last line in the file that starts with BP.
Basically, off the top of my hat, the line should read something like this:

BP number comma number and so on until there s a single digit number, then slash text

If you don't find a single digit number in the last BP line then go to the next preceding BP line and check there and so on.

If you compare all BP lines, you will find only a few with a single digit number. Those are the ones that contain some sound control.

Delete the last single digit number which controls the sound.

This is my first response and I have not looked at the last file yet. I will do that. If my answer should differ, I will leave a note.

I goofed. It's not the BP line. It's the BB line that controls the sound.
I went back and looked at the file. Close to the end, there is a sound command embedded in:
BB 2,29,9,1,13,79,17,0,5
just where we get to the Copyright line.
The last digit in the BB line controls the sound.
0 stands for no sound

The remedy is, therefore, to change 5 to 0.

Thanks to Clemensko for your work on this! Appears to be a good interim solution until AOL 2.0 is released, for people who are short on hard drive space.

Question: AOL at 2400 baud is none too snappy anyway (although it's head and shoulders above Prodigy with all its full color advertisements coming through the pipe). Does running AOL from a floppy slow things down even more because of the disk access time, or is the slowdown mainly just on opening the program and then it runs fairly normally?

I have been playing with the geos.ini to make this work on the T-1000. I have had some success (see above), but would like a " reference" about the ini file. I have redirected where to look for some of the files. Some times it works (ie ui and motif .geo) and some times not. Any hints or general directions for what works and / or where kernel looks for some files?

I downloaded Geosport last weekend after reading a note from ZenGeos about it in MHM.
My end goal is to be able to run Geosport from the 720K floppy in my ancient but still functioning T1000, which is my "desk" computer at work. Unlike the other user playing with Geosport on this machine, mine has no RAM disk or any extra memory at all...just the basic 512K that came with the machine. So obviously, I have a bit of work to do here. All I really need to work from the floppy are Write, and GeoDex, and GeoMgr's file handling capabilities. But I appreciate the program a lot. I'm going to either try to pare it down to the 720K or try loading it onto a SuperStor'd floppy, which will give me a bit more room.
One thing...probably, a very simple question to all you computer mavens, but it has me mystified :) At home, my 3 1/2" drive is B: and that's where I put Geosport. And on my home machine, it runs fine. However, the workstations at work (where I'd also like to be able to load this up) are all a: drives, as is the T1000. Geosport will try to load and hang. I can't seem to figure out what file needs to be redirected to a: instead of b:, and obviously, I don't need run it at home, where I have GWs installed on my hard disk :) Can't take my download to work and "install" it specific to that machine, since it doesn't have GWs in the first place. Any suggestions?

This is a very impressive program! I had been looking for something similar for awhile.

The way GeosPort is written, what counts is where your floppy is when you install it. You can install to either drive A or drive B.
Once GeoWorks is on the floppy, you can use it from drive B on the other computer.
The only drive the GeosPort Geos.Ini file looks to is drive C: for swapping to disk. I included that redirection because the floppy does not contain a lot of space for swapping and every HD system has a C drive.

Does this help? If not, ask again.

...may be that there IS no hard disk in his "plain vanilla" T1000...many of those machines were sold with only the basic 720k floppy...

I think you may be right...the T1000 thinks that its ROM (where DOS resides) is drive c: and that the floppy is a:
In this instance, will Geosport work at all, or am I spinning my wheels?
Geosport will obviously _not_ be able to "swap" to ROM.

I have been playing around with the setup on a t-1000 for about a month now. As clemensko said above, you can't get the basic set up lower than about 850+- k. You will need to either superstore the disk ( can you run from that??) or get the extra memory. If you can get a combined memory or total disk of 1.2 meg to 1.5 meg, it can be made to work. Not fast, but it does work. So far I have only gotten several of the applets and geo draw to work. on the 1000 because of space limits. good luck.

Try as a solution a change in the GEOS.INI file on your floppy.
Where it says SWAP, replace the reference to the C: drive with a reference to the A: drive.

Depending on your configuration of your GeosPort setup, you may have as much as 500 Kb free for disk swapping. You may need to reduce the swap size in the INI also, but I don't know the right numbers offhand. Start with a reduction to 25% and then go down from there.

Another solution is to delete the diskswap line in the INI file right at the top under the header SYSTEM. The reference there is DISK.GEO or so.

Does this help ?

I will append to the end here my geos.ini, directory of A: and D: drives. ClemensKo's idea of killing the disk.geo swap is a good idea. You will need the biggest d: ram you can set up. This is still very much a work in progress, but it does work.

The files in the state directory are created during shutdown. I recommend that you open ALL the apps and minimize them before shutdown, and never close them. That way they are always available at the bottom of screen. You can also change swap to d: or eliminate it. Either works faster than on a:.
I will post the final versions and a how too when I finish.

How much are you willing to pay ?

Just kidding.

We'll look into this in a while ... like, when floppies are 2.8 Mb in capacity!

I brought 2.0 down to between 2 and 3 Mb without much effort several weeks ago. I doubt that I can fit it on 1.4 Mb. We'll see .

Let's focus first on listing here all the configurations that we've had success with.

with a 1.44 disk, and the disk compression things, might it be possible??

Just a thought.. don't use disk compression but know that floppies can be compressed... of course might need a hard drive to have the compression software!

The idea of GeosPort was to be independent of a hard drive and compression programs.
Bruce is right, with a compression program it might be possible to get 2.0 on a floppy. For instance, WinLite works with compression. The drawback is that you cannot use the floppy to run Windows. All you can do is decompress your floppy files to a hard drive.
Perhaps real-time /on-thefly compression will make the other approach possible. Compressors that come to mind are the French LZE program and PKLite, perhaps the Japanese Diet?
Any experience with those to share? I've used LZE with success on exe and com files but never in conjunction with VM files.

...with Stacker 3.0, you can use Stacker Anywhere, to produce a compressed floppy that requires no additional external software (other than what's on the diskette). I understand that, using this setup, you can fit around 1.8 megs on a 1.44 Meg floppy. You can also do something vaguely similar with a DOS 6.0 floppy (max capacity about 1.6 Meg), using DblSpace, as long as the recipient has DOS 6.0 and you can stand the 44 k of memory to load the driver in order to mount the floppy....

...and you can, I gather, use either method with a floppy formatted to larger original capacity using a driver like 800.COM to allow putting more sectors on each track, though you then need that driver on the host machine. 800, at least, only uses about 1k RAM as long as the complete program is available (for help, mainly) on the original load path.

The combination of 800 and Stacker Anywhere should get you something close to 2 Megs on a 1.44 Meg diskette...likely enough to a stripped GEOS 2.0! B)

Subj: Geo-write on T-1000

From: SanfordM

I have finished (or at least as far as I can take it) the setup for geosport-geowrite on a t-1000. The required resource is the spell library in the SYSTEM directory. If we had room, we could also add the contents fo the DICTS directoy. You may be able to do this on a single disk 1.44 meg setup, but on the T-1000, there is no room.
The good news is geowrite on the Toshiba works.
The bad news is that it is not 100%. With no DICTS file, spell check does not work. I can only get the standard font, standard size (in my case Berkley at 10 pt) to work. It will not work in a "standard" geosport setup either. There is obviously some resource missing. If I find it, I'll post. Non the less, you can do most of the work, underline, format paragraphs and other stuff. You can apply different formats to the text, and it shows in the format commands, just not on the screen. I guess when you put it in the HD installed geos it will work.
I will attach my setup and geos.ini below ( and go to a second message if needed)
To run this kill the token.db for the first run. Open the Apps directory on a: . Open write and then open a document (I used name BLANK) in the a:\data directory. Minimize the write and then shut down. This is the file you should start with, to avoid building Write untitled files on the d: (ram disk) drive. there is room for a few, just not many, so do it the way outlined. When you restart the minimized write is available. If you don' t have enough space on D: , during shutdown, you will get errors about writing state files. You can ignore them, however when you restart, your saved conditions will not be restored.

You can use PKZIP and PKUNZIP to get files on D: drive.
Create a floppy with geosport. Add write and the spell library. Copy the required files from this floppy to the 720 A:\ and A:\apps. Create a data directory if you want. Erase the moved files. Get another 720 floppy and (assumn master in b: empty in a:) PKZIP -urp a:geosd b:*.*
This will create a zip with directorys names and setup stored. Move this file to the a drive of the T-1000 and issue PKUNZIP -dn geosd d:\ . This will create the directory structure on d: Save the floppy, you can save your evolving setup with PKZIP -urp a:geosd d:\*.* when you change setups. This should be familiar to you if you have a t-1000 anyway.
Good luck. I will clean up and finish the GEO-DRAW with others and post soon. I think I can get all the PIM stuff with GEO-DRAW (ie notepad, geodex etc). I can get Tetris with this too, but not solitare. The resources for it are too big.

Subj: Possible bug, and fix
Date: 93-06-04 23:55:48 EDT
From: TomVicenza

Before downloading GeosPort, I download the file description and saved it in a file called geosport.txt. When I tried to run the program to create Geos on a floppy drive, it failed; hung just after starting. I tried it several times. Te solution was to move my file geosport.txt to another directory, and then everything worked fine, the program ran to completion and created geos on a floppy. The program author, Clemensko, thinks this may be a CPU specific bug. If so, mine is an Intel 486SX-25.

To make this easy to read, expand the window out to full width, or print.
As promised, the setup for Geodraw and the various PIM modules. If you want sepparate setups for geodraw and PIM, eliminate the PIMs from the geodraw setup, and the Geodraw app and resources from the PIM setup. I don't have an external modem handy to test the Geocomm, but It acts like it will work. To setup on one disk (as geosport was meant to do), just move the apps to the world directory and all the a:\*.geo stuff to system.
One bug is that you are stuck with one font in one size. The same problem I have in the Geowrite setup. I am missing something (help appreciated) in the fonts or drivers or something. Becareful running this. You can open multiple apps, and up to a point they run, SLOWLY, but they do run. However, since we are dealing with so little memory and disk, you can get a FULL MEMORY error. The only way out is to exit and then reset the workspace on restart. You lose all your stat files.
The Geos.ini file. Should be same as geowrite version, but may differ a little, because of setups I did druing test.

Subj: Comments on T-1000 setups
Date: 93-06-06 22:49:04 EDT
From: SanfordM

Some general commens and obsevations on the above setups for a t-1000.
First:THANK YOU CLEMENS KOCHINKE for creating the app to allow me to try this.
Second: If the setups are wrong in the T-1000 stuff, I messed up not Clemens.

Putting Geos on a T-1000 pushed both the machine and the program. It should only be used as a backup, or maybe a PIM. It works, but it is very slow. Remember the T-1000 is a 4 mHz (I think) machine with a slow floppy. The fact that it works at all is a testimony to Geos's programers.
It takes a lot of the machines resource to run and will eat up a battery. My guess is about 2 hours with the OEM batterys, maybe 4 with a long range set. It takes almost 50% of the cpu time as displayed by PERF to run my idle setup of Clock, Geos, and Perf meter. The same setup takes about 6% of a 386sx 16.
The best way to setup is to open the apps you will use and then minimize them with what ever file(s) you want to use open. The reason for this is that you can open them with keyboard commands via the Express selection on the top menu rather than mouse. Mice on airplanes don't work well.
I am missing a setup item that deals with fonts. None of the setups I have uploaded allow me to change the size of, or choose another font (even when I have more than one font in the font directory). This is a minor problem for most of what you CAN do on a T-1000, but is annoying. It makes the 3d font demo pretty useless. Help would be appreciated.

Lastly, have fun with this. I have already impressed a couple of folks with a GUI running on an admittly old and slow machine. Its also a fair backup system, and since 2.0 can import 1.x stuff (so I've heard), you could do some initial work on the plane, train or else where.

Subj: Congratulations

Sanford really pushed the envelope with his configuration. Running a fullfledged multitasking multithreading GUI on an 8086 with no hard drive and a mere 720K floppy plus RAM disk is a real accomplishment worthy of an entry into the GuinessBook of Records !
.
Sanford opened up another market niche for GeoWorks. I hope GW Steve reads this. ;>

Subj: Font fix with geo stuff
Date: 93-06-10 21:32:34 EDT
From: SanfordM

This fix is via GWRepLinda, and it works.
The fix is to copy a font that is NOT berkley or bison or universal to the font directory. Apparently these fonts don't work with geo-draw or geo-write. To pick a font, run geo-write or draw from your stardard hard disk setup. Choose the fonts choice menu, and look at those fonts. Keep in mind that some of them are very large files. I wanted to use roman.fnt, because the 3d-font demo uses that, however it is too large to fit in my setup.
If you are concerned about space, and if you set this up on a thoshiba t-1000, you are, there is a further fix. Pick one of the fonts that work and is a small file like cooper or fgothic. Eliminate all the fonts except that one from your d:\geoworks\font directory. Edit your geos.ini file and replace berkley with either cooper of fgothic. Spelling COUNTS. The name of the font must be the same as the name of the file with out the .FNT extension. Good luck

From: Dennisuscg

I ran geosport with great success however when I configured to AOL upon clicking the icon I got a Library rescource error. Just so you knowI put pcaovpic.vm, pcaodb.vm, pcaohelp.vm and the other pcao file in the qforms sub and pcao.geo in the world as instructed. Which other file could they be refering to?

From: SilntObsvr

...this is just a guess, but did you remember to put SERIAL.GEO into the \GEOWORKS\SYSTEM directory? You also need BERKELY.FNT and BISON.FNT in the \GEOWORKS\FONT directory, if they aren't already there...
