Custom Overlays Published for IntelliKeys

July 23, 1993 -- Richmond, CA--Educational software publishers are now
developing custom overlays for IntelliKeys, the award-winning keyboard
from IntelliTools. Hartley Courseware, the UCLA Intervention Program, R.J.
Cooper, and Marblesoft are creating custom overlays for IntelliKeys as
part of their software programs for use in special education and early
childhood.

IntelliKeys is a keyboard for the '90s, one which can be used--by merely
changing cables--with any Apple II, Macintosh, or IBM/compatible computer.
IntelliKeys comes with six standard overlays--Arrows, Numbers, Alphabet,
Basic Writing, and QWERTY overlays for Apple and IBM--and a Setup Overlay
for adjusting feature settings on the keyboard. A bar code on the back of
each of these overlays signals the keyboard to reconfigure, thus making it
the keyboard with a "changing face." IntelliKeys also works with custom
overlays, either provided by a software company, such as Hartley, or those
made by the user with IntelliKeys Overlay Maker software designed by
IntelliTools.

"From its initial design, IntelliKeys has had the capacity to accept these
custom overlays," says Arjan Khalsa, president of IntelliTools. "Now our
customers can benefit from this advanced technology. We also are
conducting studies on the effectiveness of these custom overlays for
learners with disabilities."

Using a preboot disk, the custom overlay information for Hartley
Courseware's I Love You in the Sky, Butterfly is automatically installed
in IntelliKeys keyboard memory. Then, when the user boots up the program
and slips one of the two custom overlays into IntelliKeys, the keyboard is
adapted especially for that program's custom overlay. Hartley's custom
overlays are available for Apple II, Macintosh LC, and MS-DOS-compatible
computers.

The UCLA Intervention Program was the first to design custom overlays to
work with IntelliKeys. There are now custom overlays for 20 Apple II and
two Macintosh programs published by UCLA for early-childhood education,
including the popular Wheels on the Bus and Old McDonald's Farm.

Two other commercial vendors are also publishing custom overlays for use
with IntelliKeys: RJ. Cooper has a program called Point to Pictures which
includes a preboot disk which allows it to work with IntelliKeys;
Marblesoft has an Apple IIe early learning packages which includes several
programs having custom overlays for IntelliKeys.

"This is just the beginning," says Khalsa. "We are working closely with a
number of publishers to include custom overlays as part of their software
packages. This means many more educational programs will be available with
custom IntelliKeys overlays, and IntelliKeys will become an even more
viable alternative to the standard computer keyboard."

IntelliKeys and IntelliKeys Overlay Maker are available from IntelliTools
or from authorized IntelliKeys dealers (such as Hartley Courseware). For

There are several software publishers who now make custom overlays that
accompany their software and which work with IntelliKeys......

Marblesoft has an Apple IIe early-learning package which includes several
programs having custom overlays for IntelliKeys. These programs feature
counting, letter-matching, early addition and multiplication, and some
items (color and shape recognition) for younger children. These programs
work on the Apple IIe, the Apple IIGS, or the Macintosh LC in the IIe
mode. For more information, contact:

R. J. Cooper has a program called Point to Pictures, which teaches cause
and effect and allows severely disabled people control their environment
and make selections. This is an Apple II program which works on Apple IIe,
Apple IIGS, or the Macintosh LC in the IIe mode, and there's a preboot
disk that allows it to work with IntelliKeys. For more information,

UCLA has created custom overlays, which work with IntelliKeys, for 15--20
of their software programs, including Wheels on the Bus and Old McDonald's
Farm. There are versions for both Apple IIe (also works on Apple IIGS, or
Macintosh LC in IIe mode) and for Macintosh computers. For more
