SYBASE PARTNER CERTIFICATION GUARANTEES CUSTOMER ACCESS TO LEGACY DATA

Seven ISVs Already Certified

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 16, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, announced today that it is certifying independent
software vendor (ISV) partner products to provide customers a direct
access link to IBM DB2 data using the SYBASE OmniSQL Gateway product. By
certifying its Open Solutions partner's tools, Sybase is guaranteeing
customers that they provide mainframe access while running in
heterogenous, networked environments. Certification occurs at the Sybase
Open Solutions Lab, a testing facility in which products can be tested
against DB2 and the SYBASE SQL Server software on a number of platforms
and using multiple network protocols.

Seven vendors including Business Objects, Clear Access, KnowledgeWare,
OpenBooks Software, Powersoft, Q+E Software, and Irinzic, have recently
certified their products to work with the OmniSQL Gateway. While more than
100 ISV tools now work with various SYBASE products, these seven partners
have taken an additional step to guarantee that their products work with
Sybase's interoperability products and directly access DB2 data; Sybase
anticipates that more tools will be certified by the year's end.

"Sybase is committed to enterprise-wide connectivity," said Berl Hartman,
Sybase's vice president of product marketing. "By using tools that
interface with the OmniSQL Gateway product, large customers can use a
variety of Sybase-certified application development, query and report
tools while achieving the performance benefits of direct access to DB2
data. The commitment that Sybase and its Open Solutions partners are
making to certify these tools encourages these customers to choose SYBASE
with confidence," she said.

About OmniSQL Gateway

Announced in April as part of Sybase's System 10, the OmniSQL Gateway
product allows users to transparently access remote data from a SYBASE SQL
Server, Oracle or DB2 database as though all data were stored locally on a
single client/server RDBMS. It is optimized for uses such as ad hoc
decision support, customized decision support applications and special-use
situations requiring data updates. Through the OmniSQL Access Module for
DB2, OmniSQL Gateway permits any Open Client application to access and
update DB2 information on the mainframe. It provides the security and
integrity of the mainframe environment as well as controllable performance
and scalability, even in environments with hundreds of clients.

The Open Solutions Lab

Sybase established the Open Solutions Lab in September 1992 to help
software vendors implement and test communications methods and support
heterogeneous computing environments, including gateway interoperability.
A primary benefit of the Lab to participants in Sybase's Open Solutions
Program, the company's third-party reseller program, is the ability to
access and test against mainframe data using the OmniSQL Access module for
DB2. In addition, the Lab allows partners to test against SYBASE SQL
Server programs from DOS, Windows, Macintosh, and Unix operating
environments while using a number of network protocols, including TCP/IP,
DECnet, SPX/LPX, and Named Pipes. The Open Solutions Lab is the primary
resource used by partners during the certification of their products.

The Open Solutions Program's Partner Certification

As participants in the Open Solutions Program, Gateway Partners are
encouraged to certify their products. Product certification requires
Gateway Partners

* provide a copy of the tested product for use in the Open Solutions Lab

* provide sales and technical support to customers who use their product
with Sybase gateway products

* complete a required test suite in the Sybase Open Solutions Lab Tools
that successfully meet these requirements will be considered Sybase
certified. Information on Sybase-certified tools is distributed to the
Sybase sales force and systems consultants.

"By certifying their products to support SYBASE, our Gateway Partners have
made a commitment to the SYBASE Open Interoperability architecture, and
Sybase has made a like investment in them by providing the Open Solutions
Lab," said Chuck Donchess, Sybase vice president of market development.
"Our Open Solutions partners are key to Sybase's strategy of providing
customers with total enterprise client/server solutions, and we look to
our Gateway Partners to develop leading tools that support Sybase's
flexible, open environment," he said.

Sybase views its relationships with third-parties as playing an integral
role in delivering complete client/server solutions to its customers. Open
Solutions Program participants are offered the technical, sales, and
marketing support required to meet these enterprise and departmental
client/server customer needs. Dedicated resources in technical, sales and
marketing areas of the Open Solutions Program were announced last month.
