A federal district court judge issued an injunction against Borland
International that prohibits the company from including its key reader
function in current and future versions of Quattro Pro. The injunction
follows a ruling two weeks ago that the key reader infringes on Lotus
1-2-3. However, the injunction automatically triggers an appeal and delays
a jury trial to determine damages until October of next year. The new
version of Quattro Pro, set for release September 1st, will not have the
key reader function. Supposedly, nine user groups have filed a
friend-of-the-coard brief complaining that decisions in the Lotus-Borland
case compromise compatibility among different software packages.
