MKS Announces New 32 bit Version of MKS Toolkit for OS/2

All utilities re-designed specifically for OS/2 2.x

August 19, 1993 - Mortice Kern Systems today announced the new version of
MKS Toolkit for OS/2, specifically designed for OS/2 2.0 and up. New
features include operating system related capabilities, new manuals, POSIX
compatibility, and new utilities such as awkc, make, and a version of
iconv.

MKS Toolkit delivers more than 130 powerful utilities, including tools for
command editing and history, file processing and comparison, and text
manipulation and sorting.

All utilities in MKS Toolkit 4.2 for OS/2 are 32 bit. The 32 bit code has
a significant impact on utilities that require large memory segments, such
as sort, awk, compress, vi and make. Using the diff command, one can now
find the difference between much larger files because there are virtually
no memory limitations. With the KornShell, there can be more functions
running at the same time due to the larger shell environments.

Version 4.2 supports features in the HPFS file system which are native to
the operating system, including long file names and permissions. There is
raw media support which means, for example, users can make backup files
that are readable by other systems with raw media support. The mul-
titasking capabilities of OS/2 2.0 enable MKS Toolkit to support back-
ground tasks. For example, the user can run make in the background while
performing another software function in the foreground. Support for real
pipes adds to the capacity of the system, making it run faster and per-
form tasks that could not be performed before. With real pipes, a user
can send the output from one program directly to the input of another, and
both programs can process this information at the same time.

AWK Compiler

A new awk compiler creates free-standing OS/2 programs from a working awk
program. This means that users can freely create and distribute
applications, without royalties. These applications can be used indepen-
dently of MKS Toolkit and MKS Awk.

MKS Make

MKS Make minimizes file maintenance by allowing users to create a rec- ipe
for large or small software projects - such as software rebuilding,
installation, configuration and documentation. The 32 bit code allows MKS
Make to handle extremely large recipes. With a user-defined depen- dency
list, MKS Make will perform precise, repeatable updates whenever
necessary. UNIX compatibility means a reduction in maintenance costs for
multi-platform developers.

Iconv

Iconv is a utility which allows the user to convert characters from one
code set to another. This utility is useful for a user who needs to
convert textual output from one language to another. For example, Russian
PC text can be converted character by character into equivalent European
text.

POSIX Compliance

MKS Toolkit for OS/2 is derived from the same open systems technology as
OpenVMS, CTOS, MVS, and MPE/iX and it is also compatible with UNIX to the
fullest extent allowed by the OS/2 operating system. The tools conform to
the approved POSIX.2 standard.

Pricing and Availability

MKS Toolkit 4.2 for OS/2 will be shipping in September 1993. It will be
available for a suggested retail price of US$299 and as an upgrade from
any previous version for US$99.
