New Lab.dbf VI Library for LabVIEW Accesses Popular Databases for Easier
Data Management and Report Generation

April 27, 1993 -- Norwood, MA - Porter Consulting, today announced Lab.dbf,
a new virtual instrument (VI) library for LabVIEW, from National
Instruments, that is used to access databases residing on VAX, MVS, and
AS/400 computer systems. With Lab.dbf, for Windows-based PCs and Macintosh
computers, LabVIEW users can transfer acquired data directly into popular
databases for easier data management. Porter Consulting is a member of the
National Instruments Alliance Program.

Lab.dbf uses a variety of networks to transfer data, including Novell,
NetBIOS, TCP/IP, DECnet, and AppleTalk. ClearAccess, a database access
software package from Fairfield Software, communicates with Lab.dbf over
the network to transfer LabVIEW data into the database. Lab.dbf provides
LabVIEW users an interface that requires no knowledge of the network or
database. To store acquired data into a database, users simply connect to
the server and log on to the database - similar to opening a file. Next,
users pass data to the Database Write VI which handles all networking and
protocol requirements automatically. After the data is transferred,
another VI closes the connection to the server. Users can fetch data from
the database in a similar manner.

"Lab.dbf solves the problem of data management and report generation for
test engineers and researchers," says Janet Porter, marketing director of
Porter Consulting. "A key feature of Lab.dbf is that engineers can use it
to leverage off existing resources in their company. Most large companies
and universities already have computers capable of handling the amount of
data that an automated test system generates."
