Software Publishers Association Releases Education Software Management
Guide

Assists K-12 Educators with Legal Software Use

July 19, 1993 (Washington, DC)- In its continuing efforts in the fight
against software piracy, the Software Publishers Association (SPA)
announced today the release of Education Software Management: A K-12 Guide
to Legal Software Use. This new guide is a complete software management
kit that contains all of the materials educators need to establish their
school/district software asset management program.

The SPA Education Software Management Guide provides step-by-step software
compliance procedures developed specifically for use in elementary and
secondary schools, districts and media centers. The easy-to-follow book
gives information about the copyright law with eight steps to becoming
software "legal," and provides information on how to perform an internal
controls analysis as well as a software audit. It also includes a glossary
of terms, District Policy Statement, the Software Code of Ethics, audit
forms, software log, and sample lesson plans, plus a copy of the
award-winning SPA anti-piracy video, "Don't Copy That Floppy."

"Response was tremendous during the Beta test period for the Guide," said
SPA Executive Director Ken Wasch. "Educators charged with responsibility
for technology have long since recognized the difficulty of managing their
software resources and staying within the law. We are now providing them
with a useful tool to help monitor their internal software practices, so
that educational institutions may become software legal."

The Guide was Beta tested by educators who provided the SPA with valuable
insight into how software can best be managed in schools, districts, and
regional media centers. Don Knezek of the Education Service Center, Region
20, in San Antonio, Texas, commented, "This represents a practical guide
to support and lead educators in their efforts to promote responsible and
loyal use of computer software."

"This is an excellent tool for administrators, teachers, and students. The
examples of non-compliance were very helpful," stated Richard P. Beruk,
Superintendent, Liberty Central School District in New York. "We thank the
SPA for taking the initiative to provide a comprehensive reference guide
in this area. We are not aware of any similar document available to public
or private schools."

The release of Education Software Management: A K-12 Guide to Legal
Software Use is part of the ongoing anti-piracy effort of the SPA. Since
1988, the Software Publishers Association has initiated hundreds of
lawsuits and audits on behalf of its members and obtained numerous search
and seizure orders against businesses, computer dealers, bulletin board
services, and educational institutions that have violated its members'
copyrights.
