Shiva Corporation Ships Upgrade to the FastPath 5

K-STAR 9.2 is First Product to Implement IP Tunneling Based on New "Dr.
Pepper" Specification

Burlington, MA--June 28, 1993 -- Shiva Corporation, the leading supplier of
remote networking and internetworking communications products, today
announced K-STAR 9.2, a software upgrade kit for the FastPath 5, the
best-selling LocalTalk-to-Ethernet gateway. K-STAR 9.2 is the first
product to feature TunnelTalk, Shiva's implementation of the "Dr. Pepper"
specification for IP tunneling.

Targeted to network managers with large internetworks, the K-STAR 9.2
release features TunnelTalk and other enhancements to help users maximize
their investment in the FastPath router line. With an estimated 60,000
installations worldwide, the FastPath router is viewed as a
mission-critical part of enterprise networks.

TunnelTalk links AppleTalk networks over TCP/IP based on the "Dr. Pepper"
specification. "Dr. Pepper" is a wide area networking specification for
encapsulating AppleTalk over IP networks. "Dr. Pepper" was developed
jointly by the founding members of the AppleTalk Networking Forum (ANF).
The ANF includes Apple Computer and internetworking vendors, including
Shiva, Cisco, Wellfleet, Novell and 3Com.

TunnelTalk is an IP tunneling routing protocol that encapsulates AppleTalk
traffic in IP and exchanges routing information. TunnelTalk lets network
managers connect AppleTalk internetworks using FastPaths through IP-only
routers, simply by entering the address of the other FastPath. K-STAR 9.2
also provides network managers with zone and device filtering, improved
monitoring, better SNMP management, added DECnet management, and reduced
traffic for routing across wide-area network connections. On June 28,
Shiva will submit TunnelTalk to the ANF for review.

"The improved FastPath 5 will be ideal for large-site management and wide
area network routing through IP internets. This upgrade demonstrates
Shiva's commitment to supporting our FastPath customers," said Dan
Schwinn, president of Shiva Corp.

Shiva's FastPath 5 is a multi-protocol LocalTalk-to-Ethernet gateway that
routes AppleTalk Phase 1 and 2, TCP/IP, DECnet, IPTalk and now TunnelTalk.
It comes with Shiva's Net Manager software, which lets users configure and
manage all their FastPaths from one location on the network. The FastPath
5 provides centralized management in a 19-inch rack environment. FastPath
is the de facto standard for AppleTalk-to-Ethernet routing, with an
estimated 56 percent of the market.

New Features

In addition to the tunneling capability, K-STAR 9.2 includes the following
new features which simplify network management:

Zone filtering--allows network managers to configure which zones LocalTalk
users can access and designate which zones are exported through IP
tunnels.

Device filtering--enables network managers to configure which devices are
"advertised" through the FastPath's different ports. Ports include:
EtherTalk Phase 1, EtherTalk Phase 2, IPTalk, IP tunnel connections and
LocalTalk.

SNMP community table--up to six communities can be configured with varying
access capabilities, including: No Access, Read Only, Clear Stats and
Configure.

UDP Time Server--enables network managers to configure which time server
provides the FastPath timing information.

Syslogging--allows set up of a syslog host for FastPath log information to
be stored.

Log message filtering--screens status messages, such as network status and
DECnet adjacency messages.

Improved DECnet management--eases DECnet troubleshooting by providing node
name database support and support of common NCP commands including: show
known nodes, show exec statistics, show adjacent nodes and loop node.
