SPECTRUM SIGNAL'S NEW VIDEO BOARD COMBINES COST EFFECTIVE C31 FLOATING
POINT DSP AND SPECTRUM'S MEDIA-LINK FOR ACCELERATED IMAGE PROCESSING.

BURNABY, British Columbia, June 21, 1993-- Spectrum Signal Processing today
introduced the latest product in the company's MEDIA-LINK family, a new
Video Board designed to provide an integrated image capture, process and
display system.

The new MEDIA-LINK Video Board (MLVB) includes an on-board color image
capture subsystem, a DSP subsystem, and an image display subsystem on a
single PC plug-in board.

The MEDIA-LINK Video Board, which can add power and speed to medical
imaging systems, remote sensors, and machine vision/robotics, is built
around Texas Instruments' 40MHz TMS320C31 DSP, and includes Spectrum's
unique MEDIA-LINK Controller (MLC). The MLC allows other MEDIA-LINK boards
to access the frame buffer at high speed, providing a means to achieve
greater image processing power between processors without bottlenecks.

"The MEDIA-LINK Video Board is ideal for imaging applications requiring
parallel processing systems, such as medical imaging," said Spectrum
President and CEO Barry Jinks. "The C31 from TI combined with our MLC
offers designers the speed and performance capabilities required for
computational-intensive graphics processing."

The MLVB uses a Texas Instruments' TMS34020 Graphics System Processor to
generate video I/O timing signals, control the serial ports of the VRAM
for display and capture, and perform graphics drawing operations. The
TMS34020 is compatible with NTSC and PAL.

C31 Ideal For Handling Complex Graphics Applications

The TM5320C31 is a streamlined, cost-reduced version of TI's TMS320C30. It
requires less power, with complete code compatibility. Several features of
the TM5320C31 make it ideally suited to imaging and graphics
applications:

* Single-instruction parallel floating-point multiplier/accumulator
  for matrix and vector arithmetic.
* Addressing modes for retrieving and storing vectors and matrices.
* Internal memories for efficient workspace operations.

The C31 satisfies many of the needs of advanced graphics and imaging
applications - including a data throughput rate of more than 40 MFLOPS. It
is also capable of accessing large banks of memory.

The MEDIA-LINK interface, which Spectrum developed last year using ASIC
technology, affords designers "processor independence" by eliminating
interprocessor slowdown and guaranteeing smooth communications in
applications that demand them. Any C31 on the MEDIA-LINK network is able
to directly access the resources of any other processor on the MEDIA-LINK
network. Bringing the C31 and MEDIA-LINK together in the MLVB offers
designers a complete range of cost-effective options without sacrificing
performance.

To help designers develop algorithms for their applications quickly and
efficiently, Spectrum provides a video system control library, MEDIA-LINK
Communications Library, and an MLView utility program. Spectrum also
offers optional software which includes an image processing library,
TM5320C3X DSP and TMS34020 GSP C compilers and assembly language tools,
DSP debugger and XDS500 debugger.

The MLVB connects to both the DSP/PC and the C31 Quad via MEDIA-LINK to
provide a turnkey image processing system integrating a host CPU, an image
capture, image process, and image display.

The MLVB will be available in early Q4 from Spectrum at US $5,995 each.
Significant discounts are available for OEMs purchasing in volume.
