Proxim Announces Next Generation Family of Long Range, High Performance
Wireless LAN Products

New RangeLAN2 Family Features Extended Range, 1.6 Mbps Raw Data Rate,
Transparent EthernetAccess, And Built-In Roaming Capability For Seamless
Wireless LAN Connectivity

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif, June 28, 1993 -- Proxim, Inc., the world's leading
supplier of spread spectrum wireless networking technology, today
announced a new family of long range, high speed wireless local area
networking (LAN) products. The new RangeLAN2 family will be exhibited at
Proxim's PC EXPO booth, June 29 - July 1, in New York City.

RangeLAN2's raw uncompressed data rate of 1.6 Mbits/second exceeds the data
rate requirements of most standard PC applications, making it an ideal
wireless platform for high-speed LAN environments. RangeLAN2 also delivers
the longest range of any wireless LAN product in its class -- operating at
a distance of up to 300 - 500 feet in normal office locations and up to
800 -1000 feet in open space environments. In addition, the RangeLAN2
family provides transparent access to standard wired LAN environments.

Proxim's existing RangeLAN product family will continue to be marketed for
lower speed LAN applications such as E-mail, printer sharing, and terminal
emulation, as well as for mobile computing solutions in vertical markets
like health care, manufacturing, distribution and retailing.

Today's announcement consists of three separate products:

* RangeLAN2/PCMCIA, a high-performance, low-power wireless network adapter
for any mobile PC equipped with a Type II Personal Computer Memory Card
International Association (PCMCIA) card slot;

* RangeLAN2/ISA a wireless LAN adapter card for desktop PCs and servers;

* RangeLAN2/Bridge, a wireless local bridge that provides transparent
access to wired LANs.

The RangeLAN2 family will ship with drivers that support most standard LAN
operating systems, including NetWare, NetWare Lite, LAN Manager and
Windows for Workgroups. All RangeLAN2 systems will also come bundled with
Proxim's unique RangeLAN2/Roaming software, a breakthrough capability
initially developed for Proxim's original RangeLAN family of adapters.
RangeLAN2/Roaming allows mobile computer users to move seamlessly from one
access point to another without losing connection to the LAN, enabling
organizations to create "microcellular" in-building wireless networks.

"With RangeLAN2, Proxim has raised the price/performance bar in wireless
data communications. We're now offering significant enhancements in
functionality plus dramatically increased performance to meet the needs of
computer users with higher data rate requirements," said Rick Heller,
president and CEO of Proxim. "Our existing RangeLAN product family,
operating at 242 Kbits/second, continues to deliver unprecedented wireless
networking value for mobile computer users in numerous vertical markets,
and for horizontal users with lower-speed LAN applications such as E-mail,
printer sharing and file transfer."

RangeLAN2 Products

RangeLAN2/PCMCIA enables portable computer users to access existing wired
client/server networks or to communicate on a peer-to-peer basis with
other RangeLAN2 desktop and portable systems. Proxim was the first to
market with, and is still the only company shipping, a spread spectrum
PCMCIA wireless LAN adapter. Like Proxim's original PCMCIA adapter,
RangeLAN2/PCMCIA will support PCMCIA version 2.0 software which includes
Card and Socket Services for "hot insertion" capability. RangeLAN2/PCMCIA
will operate at an average power output of 100 milliwatts, the same power
output as the original RangeLAN/PCMCIA, and the lowest power consumption
of any wireless LAN product on the market.

RangeLAN2/ISA is a wireless LAN adapter that fits into the expansion slot
of most desktop PCs and servers. RangeLAN2/ISA provides an
easy-to-install, wireless extension to existing wired client/server LANs
for desktop locations that are difficult or expensive to wire. It can also
be used as a stand-alone peer-to-peer networking solution in smaller
companies or departments. With Proxim's unique spread spectrum
architecture, any RangeLAN2/ISA that is connected to a wired LAN can
function as the base station or access point for other RangeLAN2 systems
not physically wired to the network.

RangeLAN2/Bridge is a wireless local bridge that enables transparent access
to standard wired LAN environments. Operating at the Media Access Control
(MAC) layer of the ISO network model, RangeLAN2/Bridge enables
RangeLAN2-equipped portable and desktop computer users to achieve
operating system and protocol independent wireless access to the wired
LAN. RangeLAN2/Bridge will support Ethernet LANs at first customer
shipment, with Token Ring LAN support planned for future availability.

RangeLAN2 Spread Spectrum Architecture

Unlike Proxim's original RangeLAN adapter family, which utilizes direct
sequence spread spectrum technology in the 902 - 928 MHz frequency band,
RangeLAN2 is based on frequency hopping spread spectrum technology in the
2.4 - 2.483 GHz band. RangeLAN2 delivers a raw uncompressed data rate of
1.6 Mbps per channel with 10 independent channels available. This
multi-channel approach enables 10 independent wireless LANs to operate
within the same physical space, effectively increasing the aggregate
capacity of RangeLAN2 networks by tenfold. Depending on traffic and
utilization patterns, network managers can add users and subnets in a
scalable fashion and load balance across networks.

"While the original RangeLAN adapter family remains exceptionally
well-suited for lower-speed LAN applications and industry-specific
wireless networking solutions, RangeLAN2 represents a breakthrough in
spread spectrum technology," said David King, Proxim's Vice President of
Marketing. "With a 2.4 GHz frequency hopping radio and 1.6 Mbps of raw
data rate per channel across 10 channels, the RangeLAN2 architecture will
keep Proxim at the forefront of wireless networking technology for years
to come."

Pricing & Availability

RangeLAN2/ISA will be available Q3 1993 and will be list priced at $595.
RangeLAN2/PCMCIA, list priced at $695, will be available Q4 1993.
RangeLAN2/Bridge for Ethernet networks will be available Q1 1994 and will
be list priced between $1500 and $2500, depending on configuration.

Proxim plans to offer a RangeLAN2 trade-up program for any existing
RangeLAN user seeking additional wireless LAN performance or
functionality. All registered RangeLAN users can receive a credit against
future RangeLAN2 purchases with a trade-in of any current RangeLAN
product. More details on the trade-in program will be announced shortly
before general availability of RangeLAN2 systems.
