ProtoView Launches ProtoGen+

New Integrated Visual Development System Speeds Development of C/C++ and
Pascal applications for Windows

New York, New York - June 29,1993

ProtoView Development Corporation today launched a new Visual Development
System for Windows applications, a fully integrated visual development
workbench that streamlines the development of C/C++ and Pascal
applications for Windows. Scheduled for shipment on July 15, ProtoGen+ can
be used for both C/C++ and Pascal applications. ProtoGen+ replaces the
ProtoGen Application Generator and the ProtoView Screen Manager, Menu
Designer, Library and Dialog Editor.

As an early pioneer in the field of visual programming for Windows,
ProtoView Development has consistently remained at the forefront of visual
development technology. The goal of the ProtoView product line is to make
the productivity gains of interpreted languages and 4-GLs available in the
standard programming languages of C, C++ and Pascal. ProtoGen+ is a highly
integrated tool set that is completely optimized to boost programmer
productivity throughout the entire development cycle. ProtoGen+ is
designed to make the process of learning and developing Windows
applications much easier for programmers, while providing all the
resources, power and functionality required by the most advanced C/C++ and
Pascal developers.

"ProtoGen+ is not only the easiest visual development tool to learn, but
also the fastest path to developing professional C/C++ and Pascal
applications," said Dean Guida, president of ProtoView Development. "With
the release of ProtoGen+, developing Windows applications is now more
accessible to more programmers than ever before --- and demonstrates
ProtoView's commitment to providing developers with next-generation
Windows based productivity tools for leading edge GUI applications."

Fast Executables

ProtoGen+ features the latest in advanced object-oriented programming,
allowing the user to simply view and select, point-and-click, or
drag-and-drop to see menus, screens and dialogs come to life. ProtoGen+
creates full-fledged, professional applications and provides abundant
functionality without reducing speed or increasing the size overhead of
the final C/C++ or Pascal code. ProtoGen+ acts like a programmer's
assistant by giving developers a jump start in creating Windows-based
applications and automating application development.

Live Test Mode

Another key feature first introduced by ProtoGen+ is a live, interactive
test mode. The user simply starts with a standard menu, tool bar and
status line. Fill out the menu with bitmaps, separators and cascaded
items. Add in status line messages for menu items, assorted child windows
and popup windows, plus common dialogs for file open, file save, help,
color selection and printer setup. Next mix in dialogs and data entry
screens, complete with data validation, picture masking, three dimensional
effects, colors and fonts. Connect everything together using menus that
float over the objects you point at, and test drive the application using
a realistic, live simulation. "Developers can test their application
before generating code or compiling the application --- no more creating
the application, adjusting, generating, compiling, debugging and
re-adjusting before the user can try out the application. " said Guida.
"What's more, generated code can be changed and enhanced by clicking on a
control, a message, a window or a dialog, placing the user in the
appropriate code location --- within their chosen editor."

Several other key features introduced by ProtoGen+ include range
validation, choice checking, DDE link field editing, complete MDI support,
tool bar support, dynamic status line functions, and a variety of custom
colors, fonts and three dimensional effects.

ProtoGen+ is the first to offer full MDI support

The highly integrated tool set provided by ProtoGen+ includes complete
support for the Multiple Document Interface (MDI) specification not only
for code generation, but also in test mode. "Users can now develop leading
edge applications with full MDI functionality without writing a line of
code," said Guida.

ProtoGen+ provides an Open Environment

"In addition to great programming tools, we're committed to providing an
open architecture that may be expanded and changed as the development
environment evolves," said Guida. "This includes outstanding supporting
products like SQLView which will be used for visual back-end database
access and application specific Visual Coders."

SQLView

As the development environment expands ProtoGen+ developers will need
visual back-end database access. SQLView will provide visual access to
over thirty different database products including Excel, DB2, dBASE
compatibles, Oracle, Paradox, Btrieve, SQL Server, Netware SQL and many
more. "Now developers can use ProtoGen+ to develop the application
front-end and SQLView to access the application back-end --- all done
without writing a line of code," said Guida.

Visual Coders

As an open development environment ProtoGen+ is fully compatible with
several optional snap-in Visual Coders which extend the UI data collection
and code generation capability. New coders will include Multimedia, MAPI,
a Report Writer and OLE 2.0.

The Visual Development Workbench

ProtoGen+ provides a completely new set of visual tools for developing
superior Windows applications. The tight integration of this tool set lets
developers navigate quickly through the entire development cycle as well
as perform tasks such as creating dialogs, developing menus, linking
functionality, testing the application and generating and compiling the
code.

The ProtoGen+ Workbench includes the following components:
* Dialog Editor
* Menu Designer
* ProtoGen+ Library
* Code Generators
* WinControl

Library ViewPaint Dialog Editor

The WYSIWYG screen painter and dialog editor is a completely visual
approach used for developing application windows, data entry forms and
dialog boxes. The user can:

* Use the Data Validation feature to verify user defined ranges,
  choice lists, mandatory fields or table look-ups
* Include custom controls, colors, fonts, and a variety of three
  dimensional effects.
* Establish Dynamic Data Exchange links between fields in a
  dialog and other applications
* Set Help Messages for each control in a dialog to be displayed
  automatically when the user presses the F1 key
* Create user defined Error Messages that can be entered and
  displayed
* Design and select tool bars that will automatically be loaded
  and displayed on the top, bottom, or either side of a dialog
  box.
* Edit and test your application Live

WYSIWYG Menu Designer

The WYSIWYG Menu designer automates the first steps in application
development and lets users quickly design and link menu resources and save
them to a single or multiple menu template files. Users may also:

* Cut, copy and paste menu items to customize menu design
* Place bitmaps as menu items
* Design pop-up menus, checked and grayed menu items, and
  include menu breaks and separators

Code Generator

The ProtoGen+ Live Test Mode is the first tool of its kind which can be
used to verify the application flow interactively before code generation.
The code generator builds on, and is completely compatible with:

* ANSI C for Borland, Microsoft, Watcom and Zortech.
* C++ for Borland's OWL
* C++ for Microsoft's MFC
* Pascal for Borland's Pascal with Objects

ProtoGen+ Library

The ProtoGen+ Library is a completely new Dynamic Link Library of over 175
screen management functions that control the appearance and behavior of
application screens. The ProtoGen+ Library:

* Supports C++ class libraries from Borland and Microsoft
* Provides advanced color and font support
* Builds applications with printing capability
* Displays data entry dialogs as MDI windows
* Browses files and reports
* Creates DDE objects
* Animates objects on the screen
* Edits files from Windows programs

WinControl Library

The WinControl Library is a completely versatile and expandable dynamic
link library of fourteen custom controls that adds to the six standard
Windows controls. Many of the controls include methods that provide
services to controls, including text drawing, field editing, mouse
processing, data validation, context-sensitive help, and DDE message
handling. The WinControl Library includes controls for buttons, numerics,
dates, colors, currencies, real numbers, strings, three dimensional
effects, tables, bitmaps, icons, tickers and more.
