NEC TECHNOLOGIES GOES AFTER COUNTERFEITERS
Consumers are warned to purchase printer supplies carefully

(Boxorough, Mass., June 22, 1993)--Battling an industry-wide problem of
counterfeit computer supplies, NEC Technologies, Inc. (NECT) announced
today that it will bring the full weight of the law down upon parties
caught counterfeiting and/or knowingly selling counterfeited NEC equipment
or supplies. NEC also released guidelines for customers to follow in order
to minimize the chance of purchasing these illegal and inferior products.

Tipped off by quality problems, NEC Technologies discovered that its
printer ribbons were being counterfeited and illegally sold around the
world. The inferior ribbons were causing problems ranging from poor print
quality to printer failure. NECT then began working with the U.S. Customs
Bureau on the case, resulting in several seizures of counterfeit
supplies.

Counterfeit trafficking is a federal felony offense which is punishable by
substantial fines and imprisonment. Counterfeit trafficking also violates
federal and state statutes on trademark, copyright and unfair and
deceptive trade practices.

"We take this very seriously, as NEC is known for its quality and these
inferior products detract from that reputation and customer relationships,
as well as from our revenues," said Jim Berrett, chief operating executive
of NEC Technologies, Inc. "We estimate that we have lost millions of
dollars in revenue."

NEC's Director of Printer Supplies Marketing and Sales, Joseph Tamker,
urges NECT customers to examine the packaging of all printer supplies they
purchase. If there is any change, no matter how minor, customers should
call 800-388-8888 to determine if the ribbon was manufactured by NECT or
by a counterfeiter. For a reliable source of supply, customers should make
sure that they are purchasing printer supplies only from authorized NEC
sources. And, Tamker explains, stay away from deals that are too good to
be true-- they probably are.

In addition to customers with questions about their NEC printer ribbons,
NECT also urges those with leads about counterfeiting activities to call
800-388-8888. NEC is also implementing new security features in its
supplies to reduce the risk to customers.
