Macmillan Books Come Alive At American Booksellers' Annual Meeting Launch
Of New Expanded Book Series Announced

May 29, 1993 -- From business and personal finance - to mystery, travel and
science - there's something for everyone in the Macmillan New Media
Expanded Book library, launched today at the annual meeting of the
American Booksellers' Association, in Miami Beach, Florida. The
publisher's first foray into the Macintosh market, the series offers
best-selling Macmillan titles on floppy disc, combining the look and
features of traditional books with electronic benefits that allow the
reader to interact with the printed word.

Designed to be read on the lightweight Apple PowerBook or any Macintosh
computer, Expanded Books make ideal travel companions. Readers can load
them onto the hard drives of their PowerBooks, giving them easy access to
reading material anytime, anywhere. These portable features leave the
laden-down, business traveler with one less item to carry... and an
instant reprieve from whatever work they bring with them on the
PowerBook.

The convenient, electronic capabilities of the Expanded Book also make
reading a more proactive experience for the user. With this new
technology, readers can search for key words or phrases; skip ahead to a
later chapter or page, simply by clicking on the chapter in the table of
contents or typing a page number; mark pages to go back to with a dog ear
or paper clip; highlight, bold or underline text, or change the type size.
There's even a backlit display that lets the user read without an outside
light source... plus an automatic bookmark that brings the reader back to
the page where they left off.

"In addition to an all-around, more enjoyable reading experience, we're
offering readers the quality and diversity of content they've come to
expect from Macmillan," said Frederick Bowes, m, President of Macmillan
New Media. "In developing our Expanded Book series, we've drawn from
well-known Macmillan imprints, such as Scribner's, Jossey-Bass and Collier
Books," he continued.

The first titles in the series include the best-selling mystery by crime
writer Patricia D. Comwell, Au That Remains; The Fragile Species by Lewis
Thomas; Peter Block's renown management guide, The Empowered Manager, from
The Jossey-Bass Management Series; Jack Sands and Peter Gammons
thought-provoking book on baseball's decline, Coming Apart At The Seams;
and Marilyn J. Appleberg's nationally-acclaimed travel books, I Love
Boston Guide, I Love New York Guide and I Love Washington Guide.

Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Macmillan New Media is a division of
Macmillan, Inc. The company designs and distributes a broad range of
electronic and multimedia products in the medical, education, professional
and consumer markets, including the award-winning Macmillan Dictionary for
Children Multimedia Edition.

The Expanded Books engine was designed by The Voyager Company, Santa
Monica, California.
