Apple Introduces Its Most Affordable LaserWriter Printer With New Energy
Efficient Mode

CUPERTINO, California -- June 14, 1993 -- Apple Computer Inc., today
introduced the most affordable, compact and energy efficient laser printer
in its growing line of printer products. With a suggested retail price of
$689, the Apple Personal LaserWriter 300 offers high quality, low cost
printing and printer sharing capabilities in a compact design weighing
less than 15 pounds.

The Personal LaserWriter 300 is uniquely designed for users who need a
printer for a home office, small business, or educational purposes at a
price that doesn't break their budget. With the Personal LaserWriter 300,
Apple is lowering the price for entry level LaserWriter printers to new
levels.

"Our education and home customers have diverse needs," said Fred Forsyth,
senior vice president and general manager of the Macintosh Systems
Division. "They want affordability without sacrificing quality. Many have
space constraints and need a compact printer that fits on a desktop. Home
offices often need to share the printer with other Macintosh computers.
The Personal LaserWriter 300 meets all these requirements and comes
complete with a variety of features for customers to print a wide range of
documents. The customer only has to plug it in and get down to business."

Full Function LaserWriter Printing

The Personal LaserWriter 300 prints up to four pages per minute and offers
300x300 dots per inch resolution with grayscale printing that produces a
wide range of gray shades for sharper and more detailed images.

The Personal LaserWriter 300 uses Apple's GrayShare printer software for
Apple QuickDraw-based personal printers. GrayShare improves ease of use,
print speed and functionality in areas such as image scaling, grayscale
printing and printer sharing so that people can print documents with the
high quality text and images they get at the office.

With Apple's GrayShare Technology, the Personal LaserWriter 300 can be used
as a personal printer or it can be shared with other Macintosh computers
connected to an LocalTalk or EtherTalk network.

The printer also incorporates Apple's TrueType font technology for viewing
and printing sharp characters in a variety of sizes and styles. It ships
with 39 of the most popular LaserWriter TrueType fonts and is compatible
with Type 1 fonts when used with Adobe's Type Manager.

The Personal LaserWriter 300 comes complete with everything necessary to
print the diverse range of documents generated in a
family--correspondence, school reports, invoices, business graphics and
other images. No additional interface cards, memory, printer drivers,
fonts or interface cables are necessary.

Easy to Use

To simplify printing, the printer comes standard with a 100-sheet universal
cassette for printing on a variety of paper sizes up to legal size. The
customer can also use the standard manual feed tray for printing on
envelopes, labels or heavy paper stock. No additional cassettes are
required.

The Personal LaserWriter 300 is a compact printer that weighs less than 15
pounds, making it light enough to be moved easily and small enough to fit
on a desktop or into other small spaces. Its easy to replace, one piece
toner cartridge guarantees clean and hassle-free maintenance.

"Last year, Apple's LaserWriter printers won the JD Power Award for
Customer Satisfaction and ease of use was a major factor," said Forsyth.
"Apple has always regarded ease of use as one of the most important
elements of a design. The Personal LaserWriter 300 continues this
tradition."

New Energy Efficiency

The Personal LaserWriter 300 is one of the first printers designed with an
energy conservation mode for saving energy and uses 50 percent less power
than many other laser printers on the market. It meets the requirements of
Energy Star, the Environmental Protection Agency's guidelines for energy
conversation, and is part of Apple's commitment to design and manufacture
products that are environmentally sound.

The energy conservation mode automatically conserves energy by shutting off
most of the printer's functions when they are not in use. Because there is
no on/off switch, the Personal LaserWriter 300 is always "asleep" until it
detects something to be printed. It automatically goes back to "sleep"
when printing is finished. While in "sleep" mode, the printer uses less
than five watts of power, or the equivalent of a television set that has
been turned off. When printing, it uses 120 watts, less than one-half the
power of most laser printers.

System Requirements, Price and Availability

The Personal LaserWriter works with any Macintosh or Macintosh Performa
with a least one megabyte of RAM, a hard disk drive and system software
version 6.07 or later. With System 7 or a later version, Apple recommends
using at least four megabytes of RAM and a hard disk drive.

The Personal LaserWriter 300 is available today wherever Macintosh
Performas are sold. It's scheduled to be introduced in the education and
consumer channels worldwide in late July. A suggested retail price of $689
makes the Personal LaserWriter 300 Apple's most affordable LaserWriter
printer.
