20 Apple Products Receive Government's New "Energy Star" for Power
Efficiency

CUPERTINO, California--June 17, 1993 -- Apple Computer, Inc. announced it
is offering a broad range of products that comply with the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) new Energy Star criteria for
low-power consumption. For many current Macintosh owners, the company is
also providing upgrades that make their Apple products use less
electricity. At a White House press conference today the EPA will
officially release the Energy Star emblem for display with
energy-efficient computers and peripherals.

The Energy Star program, a cooperative effort between government and
industry, is expected to save consumers electricity costs and reduce air
pollution caused by energy production. According to the EPA, reducing the
energy consumed by computers in the U.S. will save enough electricity by
the end of the decade to eliminate 10 coal-fired power plants and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 5 million cars. The Agency
estimates that users of Energy Star computers will save $2 billion
annually.

"Apple is committed to producing products in a manner that conserves the
environment. Energy efficiency is a step further toward managing the
environmental impacts of computers-from their design to eventual
disposal," said Fred Forsyth, senior vice president and general manager,
Macintosh Systems Division. "We plan to provide energy-saving features
across current and future product lines, and whenever possible to offer
upgrades to our installed base," he added.

Apple was an early participant in the Energy Star program, working with a
few other manufacturers to help the EPA develop its technical criteria.
The program was announced one year ago, allowing industry time to develop
engineering designs and marketing plans. President Bill Clinton issued an
Executive Order in April that requires all federal agencies to purchase
only computers that meet the Energy Star requirements, providing they are
commercially available and meet the agency's performance requirements.

The Apple Personal LaserWriter 300, introduced this week, is one of the
first printers designed with an energy conservation mode. It is always
"asleep" unless it is actually printing. While in sleep mode, the Personal
LaserWriter 300 uses less than 5 watts of power, or the equivalent of a
television set that is turned off. While printing, it uses 120 watts, less
than one-half the power of most laser printers.

The Apple Macintosh Color Classic, introduced February 1993, was the
industry's first desktop computer system that automatically reduces power
consumption to less than 25 watts when it is idle. Through the Macintosh
screen control panel, users simply define the period of time that the
computer can be inactive before the sleep mode starts. A recent Apple
survey of Color Classic users indicated that over 80 percent were
consistently using the sleep mode feature and valued the energy savings
capability.

To qualify for an Energy Star a computer or monitor must use no more than
30 watts of energy to operate or automatically "power-down" after a period
of inactivity. An integrated monitor and CPU must use 60 watts or less.
The requirements for desktop printers are specific to particular
performance categories: 1-7 pages-per-minute, 30 watts after 15 minutes;
8-14 pages-per-minute, 30 watts after 30 minutes; color laser printers and
more than 15 pages-per-minute, 45 watts after 60 minutes.

The following Apple products comply with Energy Star requirements. The new
energy savings features have not increased unit prices of these Apple
products.

In addition to the above products, Apple is providing energy savings
capability to the installed base of LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630 printers
by offering special software upgrades through the Apple Assistance
Center.

The Smartbar line of products from Sequence Electronics, offers a range of
options for bringing Energy Star capability to the Macintosh Centris 610
and 650, the Macintosh Quadra 800 and 950 and the Macintosh IIvx as well
as most Macintosh computers and monitors introduced since 1986. These
products allow most Macintosh computers or displays to automatically
power-down after a period of inactivity without loss of data. A touch of
the keyboard or mouse energizes the system. Apple plans to make the
Smartbar products available through the Apple retail catalog beginning
today for special 30-day promotional prices that range from $59 to $129.

Customers who want more information on Apple products that meet the Energy
Star requirements for low power consumption or who want the LaserWriter
Pro software upgrade should call the Apple Assistance Center at
800-776-2333. For more information about Smartbar, contact Sequence
Electronics at 800-663-1833. For more information on Energy Star programs,

Apple believes that a comprehensive environmental program is an essential
component of doing business. Current corporate programs include battery
and toner cartridge recycling programs for customers, environmentally
sensitive packaging, energy-efficient products, a worldwide
chlorofluorocarbon elimination policy, product grants to environmental
groups, internal recycling, and environmental volunteer and education
programs for employees.
