SYBASE EXPANDS PLATFORM SUPPORT FOR APT WORKBENCH 4GL DEVELOPMENT TOOLS

Application Development and Deployment Support for Unix, VMS and DOS
Environments

EMERYVILLE, CA, June 2, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., a leading vendor of
client/server based software products and services, today announced the
availability of the SYBASE APT Workbench product on three new platforms:
Sun Sparc Solaris 2.1, DEC AXP Open VMS, and MS DOS. Additionally, APT
Workbench now provides graphical conversion capabilities for deploying
applications in Motif environments. The SYBASE APT Workbench product is a
4GL development environment used to prototype, build and maintain on-line
client/server business applications for deployment to either character or
graphical user interface environments.

"Customers are extremely pleased with our expanded platform support and GUI
for the APT award-winning development environment. The fact that an APT
application is 100% portable from UNIX and VMS to DOS means that software
engineers don't have to spend their time porting," said Stewart Schuster,
vice president of Sybase marketing. "In addition, we gave our UNIX
customers a time saving solution to transform existing terminal or
workstation applications to graphical applications that support the Motif
GUI standard."

Optimized for SYBASE SQL Server, the APT Workbench product provides
developers with a powerful 4GL to generate applications and build forms. A
customer's installed base of PCs can now run industrial strength
development applications -- continuing to provide good price/performance
solutions for financial and accounting applications, MRPII packages, order
entry, transaction processing, and data entry requirements. With this
additional PC support, customers benefit from an even broader choice of
client solutions for the enterprise client/server network.

The SYBASE APT Workbench Product

The SYBASE APT Workbench product was designed to support on-line
applications in client/server environments. The APT Workbench recently won
the Digital News & Review target award for best 4GL. The SYBASE APT
Workbench product includes a set of tools for designing, prototyping,
building and maintaining forms-based, on-line applications. The APT
Workbench development environment consists of a visual forms editor, an
application generator, a full-featured 4GL and 3GL language support. A
runtime environment, APT-Execute, is also available. For Motif
environments, a Motif deployment toolkit is used to translate and
customize APT applications for the graphical Motif environment. For PCs,
in addition to APT Workbench and APT-Execute, the APT 32-bit Deployment
Toolkit for MS DOS is available.

Full 32-Bit Support for PC Platforms

The SYBASE APT Workbench product is one of the first PC development tools
to deliver 32-bit client/server applications. The robust development
environment of the SYBASE APT Workbench allows users to develop and deploy
larger mission-critical applications on PC platforms with the performance
and reliability they have come to expect with UNIX or VMS platforms. "Our
customers have applications with hundreds to thousands of screens. Only a
32-bit environment," added Schuster, "will support this magnitude of
client/server applications."

Increasingly, PCs play a critical role in enterprise-wide, client/server
networks. Because the SYBASE APT Workbench for PCs is 100% compatible with
applications running on UNIX or VMS, they can preserve their investments
and leveraging the power of PCs in the network.

New Workstation Support

The SYBASE APT Workbench now supports two of the newest, most advanced
workstation platforms: Sun Sparc Solaris 2.1 and DEC AXP Open VMS. In
addition, the SYBASE APT Workbench product supports: Sun SPARC SunOS, IBM
RS/6000, DEC VAX VMS, HP 9000/700 & 800, NCR 3000, DEC RISC Ultrix and HP
9000/300. The SYBASE APT Workbench product fully supports UNIX and VMS
environments, and provides portability of applications across
heterogeneous hardware platforms.

Motif support

With the enhancement of the SYBASE APT Workbench product to include Motif
support, developers can now deploy character-based applications in a
standard graphical environment. The APT for Motif product translates and
executes the application using native Motif widgets.

Sybase customers benefit from a migration strategy that allows them to
develop applications once -- and then deploy the application across the
system using an automatic GUI conversion process. Developers now have a
quick and accurate way to increase their own productivity, as well as
providing data-rich a with enhanced ease-of-use for the end-user, using a
graphical presentation of key information.

Pricing/Availability

The SYBASE APT Workbench product is currently shipping on all new platforms
announced above. The SYBASE APT Workbench product for Motif runs on the
Sun 4, IBM RS/6000, HP 9000/800, and HP 9000/700 platforms. Pricing for
the APT Workbench product ranges from $595.00 to $98,970.00 depending on
CPU size and number of users. Runtime pricing is also available.
