SYBASE AND INTERMETRICS TEAM UP TO DEVELOP FIRST COMMERCIAL ADA LANGUAGE
SAMeDL PRECOMPILER

SYBASE SAMeDL precompiler will be the first commercially available product
based on the SAMeDL specification

EMERYVILLE, CA, June 8, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., a leading vendor of
client/server-based products and services, today announced an agreement
with Intermetrics, Inc., a leading developer of Ada language technology.
Under the agreement, the companies will work together to co-develop the
first commercially available precompiler that implements SAMeDL (SQL Ada
Module Description Language), a high level language that is emerging as
the government standard for Ada/SQL binding.

Sybase and Intermetrics are developing the SYBASE SAMeDL precompiler, which
is optimized to work with the SYBASE SQL Server relational database
management system (RDBMS). The SYBASE SAMeDL precompiler product will
provide a flexible and powerful way to interface Ada and SQL Server
applications, while promoting database independence and application
portability.

The Ada language has long been a standard within the federal market for
building mission-critical applications, and has been more recently
mandated for all Department of Defense applications development. Ada has
been adopted in some commercial applications as well.

SAMeDL is the first Ada/SQL binding method to exploit the software
engineering principals of Ada. The Software Engineering Institute
developed the language specification, with government funding, after
recognizing that existing Ada/SQL binding methods, like Embedded SQL, are
not well suited for use with the Ada language. SAMeDL has been available
as a specification, and has been implemented as a component of custom
development projects by developers such as Intermetrics.

Intermetrics' director of business development, Bill Zimmerman, commented,
"For the past four years Intermetrics has worked very closely with the
Software Engineering Institute to develop the SAMeDL language and toolset.
Capitalizing on this and our extensive Ada, database and compiler building
experience, we are able to evolve the SAMeDL technology into an efficient
and high performance product. With the SYBASE SAMeDL precompiler,
customers building Ada applications will be able to take advantage of the
Ada language and underlying database technology."

Ben Martindale, director of Federal marketing at Sybase, added, "Sybase is
proud to be the first relational database vendor to respond to the growing
demand among customers for a standards-based approach to Ada/SQL bindings.
We're pleased to be working with Intermetrics, a recognized expert in Ada
tools and technology. By combining Sybase's expertise in SQL databases and
Intermetrics' expertise in Ada processors, we will provide customers with
the best product of its kind to allow for integration of Ada and the
SYBASE SQL Server product in an open systems environment."

SAMeDL

SAMeDL supports a standard modular interface. It allows for isolation of
DBMS differences and tighter integration with Ada applications by
promoting facilities for the use of strong and abstract typing, record
oriented interfaces, and exception handling. The features of the SAMeDL
provide enhanced application portability, high potential for interface
component re-use, standard support for Ada's strong typing characteristics
and lowered maintenance costs for the development of large Ada database
applications.

Although SAMeDL has not yet been officially adopted as a standard, it has
begun to appear as a required binding method in many procurement requests
and requirements documents, and is currently an International Standards
Organization (ISO) draft international standard.

SYBASE SAMeDL Precompiler

The SYBASE SAMeDL implementation will consist of an easy to use compiler
and a library management facility called the Module Manager. The user will
describe the interface in SAMeDL and will then invoke the compiler to
generate all of the necessary Ada code and interfacing software.
Describing the interface in SAMeDL provides a natural, independent means
of communicating with SYBASE SQL Server. The Ada specifications that are
generated provide a portable means of connecting an Ada program to the
DBMS.

The SYBASE SAMeDL precompiler will be optimized to take advantage of
special SYBASE features, such as stored procedures and triggers, that
support high performance computing and multi-threaded client connections
to the SYBASE product line. It will work with the SYBASE SQL Server, the
SYBASE Secure SQL Server and the SYBASE Open Server products.

The SYBASE SAMeDL precompiler will be co-developed by Sybase and
Intermetrics. Sybase will retain exclusive rights to sell and market both
products. Pricing and availability will be announced later in 1993.

SYBASE Ada Products

Sybase develops and markets the SYBASE System, which consists of products
in three categories: servers, connectivity, and tools.

In addition to the SYBASE SAMeDL precompiler product, Sybase offers the
following Ada products: the SYBASE Open Client/Ada product, which is the
basic call-level interface to the SYBASE SQL Server; and the SYBASE Ada
Workbench product, a 4GL environment for rapid development of full-scale
Ada applications.

Sybase is the only company that provides database support that complements
Ada's multi-tasking capabilities. With SYBASE System 10, the company
offers a client interface that allows for full exploitation of
multi-tasking Ada applications that work with SQL Server's multi-threading
database capabilities.

Intermetrics Software

Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Intermetrics is one of the
leaders in designing and building computer language systems. The
Department of Defense has chosen Intermetrics as the Mapping/Revision
contractor for Ada 9X, the Ada programming language to meet the
requirements of the 1990s. Intermetrics offers complete Ada environment
integration services by combining proprietary technology with that of
other vendors to fulfill each client's application development needs.
Intermetrics has led the way in the design of innovative development
environments over the past 24 years. It has created such environments not
only for Ada, but for HAL/S, VHSL, SPL/l, Jovial, C, and Modula as well.
