Cheyenne's Contribution to Data Security is a Complete, Clean, Virus-Free
Backup!

Your valuable computer data is exposed to disaster each and every day of
the week. You may experience a power glitch and lose your hard disk; you
could accidentally erase files and directories; someone else might sit at
your computer and erase files and directories; you may accidentally
unleash a virus on your computer. These dangers are real, and we confront
them every day The danger is compounded when your system is attached to a
network.

Data security comes in many shapes and forms, and varies from organization
to organization. In some military and government circles, security
consists of PCs installed in special cases and placed so that no one can
walk up behind you and peak over your shoulder. Some PC manufacturer's
address security by providing PCs with a key lock that allows you to
disable the power supply. Some operating systems (such as NetWare and
UNIX) address security by providing password protection, and establishing
different levels of users with different privileges. All of these methods
protect certain aspects of your system to certain degrees, but none of
them are foolproof

To get as close as possible to a secure system (assuming there is no such
thing as a 100% secure system) you need to adopt a combination of
strategies to protect your data. The following suggestions can help save
you from losing data to some of the more common data deamons.

Use your system's built in security

The first step you can take is to use the built in security systems that
come with your computer and software. If your computer has a lock, lock it
when you leave at the end of the day If you are running Novell's NetWare,
use passwords and limit the rights of users on your system. Institute
procedures to prevent people from putting unauthorized diskettes into the
system; this is primarily how viruses are spread.

Use software designed to provide security

The next stage of system security is to actually purchase software designed
to help you protect your system. Cheyenne's ARCserve and InocuLAN are two
software products that can go a long way to protecting your valuable
data.

Backup your data

You should make a copy of your data and store it off-site. ARCserve is a
fully automated data management system. It can back up data to tape or to
another hard disk. You can schedule ARCserve to do this during off hours,
and you can even set up a tape rotation scheme and back up your data
nightly. ARCserve can backup NetWare servers, local workstations, and
remote workstations (including PCs, MACs, and UNIX boxes).

Hard disks are getting bigger, and more reliable all the time. The down
side to this is that since your hard disk holds more data and lasts
longer, you neglect to back it up. Then the day comes when your system
can't seem to read from the hard disk any more, and all your valuable data
is gone. ARCserve protects your data from hard disk failures, is easy to
use, and could pay for itself by recovering the contents of just one hard
disk.

Check for viruses

You should check your system regularly for viruses. Cheyenne's InocuLAN is
a server-based, anti-virus program. It's designed to protect your Novell
servers and clients from viruses. Although a great deal of viruses are
spread from floppy disks, a network offers many points of entry for a
virus. A file server is also a perfect breeding ground for viruses. If a
virus gets into your file server and starts doing damage, and you don't
have a backup of that file server, your chances of recovering data could
be slim.

InocuLAN scans your volumes for viruses at intervals that you can set. It
scans for known viruses, and it also has the ability to detect virus-like
behavior on your workstation and than act on it. Once InocuLAN detects a
virus, it can send you a notice and you can request that it remove the
virus. InocuLAN in most cases, then removes the virus code from the
infected files and in many instances is able to cure the virus.

InocuLAN also works with ARCserve by scanning files for viruses as ARCserve
backs them up to minimize the possibility of backing up a virus
contaminated file.

System security comes in many shapes and forms. Cheyenne's contribution to
data security is a complete, clean, virus-free backup.

Cheyenne Software Acquires Applied Programming Technologies

Cheyenne is very pleased to welcome Applied Programming Technologies, Inc.
(APT) of Lake Success, New York to our family.

APT is the developer of NOSS, a Network Object Storage Subsystem software
product, which is used to meet the high capacity storage demands of
today's local and wide area network environments. The product provides an
ideal environment for large volume storage of corporate records, document
images, CAD files, databases and spreadsheets. APT also markets CASE
(computer aided software engineering) tools which assist the user in the
development of object-oriented imaging applications that run under
Microsoft's Windows 3.1 Operating System. These tools manage the scan,
view and print operations required by all imaging applications and are
easily applied using visual programming methods.

Cheyenne is optimistic that the integration of APT's storage technology and
ARCserve will produce a multitude of rewards for both companies, as well
as the end-user. In addition, we feel confident that similar advantages
will result from the integration of APT's imaging technology with
FAXserve, the company's server-based facsimile services software product,
and any future Cheyenne product offerings. Cheyenne will integrate APT
technology with its line of network storage software products and will
market these products through its worldwide OEM and distribution soles
channels.

Cheyenne Software and EduQuest, Sign OEM Agreement

In January Cheyenne announced the establishment of an OEM (original
equipment manufacturer) relationship with EduQuest, the IBM Educational
Systems Company which will provide EduQuest customers with a complete
storage management solution.

EduQuest will be marketing Cheyenne's ARCserve as a bundled solution with
IBM's 4mm and 8mm DAT Tape Drives. The solution is now available to the
U.S. and Canadian elementary and secondary education markets through
EduQuest's Direct Sales Representatives. The IBM 4mm 2.0G Tape Drive
provides up to 2GB of data per cartridge (4-8 GB with data compression),
as well as a diagnostic tape cartridge for stand-alone diagnostic tests.
The IBM 8mm Tape Drive provides 2.3GB of storage capacity in either an
internal or external chassis. As new technology is developed by IBM, it
will be consistently reviewed for certification with ARCserve.

EduQuest, the IBM Educational Systems Company, specializes in the

Links in the Cheyenne Product Chain
ARCserve/Open Now Shipping

ARCserve/Open, Cheyenne's first native UNIX backup and restore solution is
now shipping and is available through many of Cheyenne's existing North
American distributors, such as Tech Data, Ingram Micro and Vitek.

Cheyenne's first entry into the UNIX market, ARCserve/Open has been
designed to provide SCO UNIX users with the same high-performance
capabilities that NetWare users have been offered in ARCserve. This
product represents yet another major milestone in Cheyenne's history The
company has applied years of experience in developing powerful, high
performance backup solutions for the NetWare environment to the UNIX
environment. Cheyenne currently provides backup services for UNIX clients
in the NetWare environment through our Uagent option for ARCserve.
ARCserve/Open for SCO UNIX now offers these customers a native solution
for use with the SCO operating system.

Cheyenne plans to extend these capabilities to other UNIX platforms in the
future.

New Support for UNIX Workstations

Cheyenne is very pleased to report the availability of additional UNIX
client backup capabilities for ARCserve. Shipping as Uagent, this client
backup ability now allows ARCserve to backup UNIX operating systems, such
as SCO UNIX, Interactive, Solaris and UnixWare. Cheyenne will also be
marketing Uagents for IBM AIX 6000, Hewlett Packard UX, and DEC Ultrix in
the very near future. (Please note support for each UNIX operating system
(Uagent) is sold separately).

Parlez-Vous FAXserve? Now you can!

Cheyenne has expanded board support for FAXserve, the first file
server-based, automated approach to network facsimile services that is
totally integrated with NetWare. FAXserve now includes support for the
Intel SatisFAXtion 400i and the Comwave Microfax boards. The SatisFAXtion
400i enables users to fax via the digital Group IV standard. Note that fax
communications to a Group III fax machine will still take place at Group
Ill speeds (9.6KB/Sec.).

Because it is certified in nearly every major market worldwide, support for
the Comware Microfax board was critical for Cheyenne's international
customers to benefit from FAXserve's high-performance fasimile management
services. Specific regulatory PTT requirements within each country require
fax boards to undergo extensive testing and modifications to comply with
its standards.

Cheyenne has also incorporated native language support into FAX-serve,
providing users with the option of using French, German, Spanish, Italian,
or entering their own language for the text contained on the fax cover
sheet.

Now any company, anywhere in the world, can standardize on one LAN FAX
product, FAXserve.
