XSoft Introduces InConcert Document-Based Workflow Management Software

Automatically locates and delivers documents and applications required for
business processes

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 1,1993 -- XSoft, a business division of Xerox,
today introduced InConcert, sophisticated document-based workflow
management software for distributed computing environments. InConcert
offers greater flexibility, scalability, and ease of use than any other
workflow product. It intuitively models and coordinates all components of
a work process, including the people, procedures and information involved,
and offers extensive real-time access to workflow status. These
capabilities enable organizations to increase productivity by streamlining
and automating the work process. Sold primarily through value-added
resellers and systems integrators, InConcert serves UNIX and PC users in
configurations from entry-level workgroups to enterprise-wide computing
systems.

InConcert automatically prompts and tracks all tasks in the workflow
process to actively locate the required business documents and software
tools for each step of a project and deliver them at the right time to the
users who need them. These business documents include spreadsheets,
images, graphics, forms, and many others. Managers can easily obtain
complete progress reports on any project, at any level of detail, at any
time.

According to John Clarry, vice president of Information Systems Engineering
at Logicon, Inc. of Arlington, VA, "As a systems integrator and developer
of Information systems software, we have stringent requirements for
process control. Our software development needs to be thoroughly
documented and capable of being managed electronically on a network.
InConcert gives us this level of control and automation in the full
software development cycle. Moreover, InConcert's robust object-oriented
design has allowed us to do continuing process improvement and incorporate
it in our Total Quality Management program."

XSoft president Dennis W. Andrews stated, "As companies continue to migrate
towards distributed computing and client/server architectures, the need
for better workflow tools to manage the movement of documents and
information across an enterprise has become much more critical. InConcert
is the first product of its kind to effectively manage people and their
work processes in an organization-wide setting with multi-vendor software
and platform compatibility. With InConcert, companies can easily manage
their document-based, mission-critical processes from a single desktop
computer or workstation."

The Need for Workflow Management

With the proliferation of widely distributed, document-based information,
the ability to effectively manage the entire work process becomes a
significant competitive advantage. As the number and value of documents
increase, having a means to effectively manage business processes within
an organization becomes crucial for increased productivity and
competitiveness. According to IDC/Avant Technologies, Inc., U.S. revenues
for workflow management software will increase from $226 million in 1992
to over $2.5 billion in 1996.

Typically, a user must sort through a large directory of information,
relying on memory to determine what needs to be done, and with what data.
InConcert is aware of the projects being handled by its users, and is also
aware of individual tasks, their status, where a document has been, who is
currently working on it, and where it should go next.

InConcert helps organizations improve productivity by automatically
delivering all the components users need -- documents, applications, and
instructions -- to complete their work. In addition, managers receive
timely and meaningful reports on work in progress, and administrators are
provided with a rich set of tools to manage the process more efficiently.

InConcert Key Features:

* Open Architecture. InConcert was developed using open systems principles
and standards with client/server architecture. It works flexibly and
transparently across multiple platforms on a network, an important asset
in today's heterogeneous computing environments.

InConcert is completely independent from any other application. It does not
require the purchase of proprietary image management, office automation or
electronic publishing software to take advantage of InConcert's workflow
management functionality.

* Flexibility. Third-party software applications can be easily integrated
into the overall process, allowing companies to leverage the value of
their existing software and database investment. Users can modify the
workflow process "on the fly" to meet the changing needs of an
organization. And with unprecedented scalability, InConcert delivers all
of its workflow management benefits to small workgroups as well as
enterprise-wide networks of thousands of users.

* Ease of Use. For the end user, InConcert's graphical user interface and
object-oriented user environment eases creation, use, and management of
the workflow process. The InConcert icon resides on all users' desktops,
and by opening InConcert, users instantly see what work is in process and
any changes in task assignments. By selecting a task, the user
automatically receives the appropriate documents and application tools
needed to complete that task.

* Standard SQL Database Support. InConcert utilizes standard relational
database software to implement workflow management. Workflow management
capabilities are based on an innovative job-based model for collaborative
process automation. InConcert jobs are described as a template stored in a
relational database, such as Sybase or ORACLE. The job template stores
information about each job, such as its owner, the sequence of tasks, the
necessary documents and applications, and the names of users responsible
for task execution. Based on this information, InConcert automatically
routes job assignments, as well as the documents and applications needed
to complete the assignments. All information about jobs, tasks, documents,
users and workflow is accessible through InConcert's predefined queries
and reports, as well as through ad hoc SQL queries or customized database
reports.

* Easily Customized for Vertical Applications Value-added resellers and
system integrators can rapidly develop customized applications for markets
such as publishing, insurance, legal, wholesale/retail distribution,
healthcare, pharmaceutical, aerospace and government. InConcert's
graphical user environment and object-oriented programming tools offer
systems integrators the ability to easily customize workflow applications.
Integrators and VARs can therefore amplify the value of systems and
software sold to customers by tailoring InConcert to a specific customer's
work processes.

Price and Availability

InConcert is available in both client and server implementations. The
server portion of InConcert is available on the UNIX platform for Sun
SPARCstations and compatibles and for the IBM RS/6000. The client portion

InConcert Features & Benefits

InConcert is sophisticated document-based workflow management software for
UNIX- and PC-based distributed computing environments. Offering
unprecedented benefits, InConcert intuitively models and coordinates all
components of a work process, including the people, procedures, and
information involved, and offers extensive real-time access to workflow
status.

Open Architecture

InConcert was developed following open systems principals and standards.
InConcert works flexibly and transparently across heterogeneous platforms
on a network, including Sun SPARC and SPARC-compatibles, IBM RS/6000 and
IBM 386 and 486 PCs and compatibles. The UNIXbased server delivers
sophisticated workflow management capabilities to heterogeneous client
desktops, serving the vast majority of distributed client/server
environments in existence today.

Flexibility

InConcert can accommodate virtually any workflow design, documentation
system, or reporting structure to meet specific user needs. Users can also
modify business process workflows "on the fly" to meet the changing needs
of an organization. Existing workflows can be re-used, rather than
re-creating structure and style parameters each time a new document is
started.

Scalability

InConcert delivers all of its process management benefits to workgroups
with as few as ten members up to enterprise-wide networks of thousands of
users, an unprecedented workflow offering.

Ease of Use

For the end user, InConcert's graphical user interface and object-oriented
environment eases creation, use, and management throughout the workflow
process. InConcert routes business process tasks directly to users (or
groups of users), along with the appropriate documents and application
tools needed to work on and complete these tasks.

Standard SQL Database Support

InConcert utilizes standard relational database software to implement
workflow management. InConcert jobs are described as a template stored in
a relational database, such as Sybase or ORACLE. Based on information
entered into these templates, InConcert automatically routes job
assignments, as well as the documents and applications needed to complete
the assignments. All information about jobs, tasks, documents, users, and
workflow status is accessible through InConcert customized database
reports. InConcert brings the full power of relational database technology
-- SQL queries, report generation, robust backup and recovery -- to bear
on all workflow applications, whether simple or complex.

Workflow and Document Management

InConcert delivers the ideal combination of workflow processing with
document management services together in one system. This provides users
with the optimal tools for automating and maintaining document-based
business processes. Without InConcert, a user must sort through a large
directory of information, relying on memory to determine what needs to be
done, and with what data. InConcert is aware of the projects being handled
by its users, and is also aware of individual tasks, their status, where a
document has been, who is currently working on it, and where it should go
next.

Active Workflow

InConcert captures information about each job: its owner, task sequence,
necessary documents, applications, and the names of users responsible for
task execution. InConcert automatically prompts and tracks all tasks in
the workflow process, actively locating the specific documents and
software tools required for each step of a project and delivering them at
the right time to the users who need them. InConcert automatically tracks
all tasks and jobs, providing complete and timely status on those
activities, as well as management reports on the organization's progress
on the whole.

Leverages Existing Software Investment

InConcert is completely independent of any other application. It does not
require the purchase of proprietary image management, office automation or
electronic publishing software to take advantage of InConcert's process
management functionality. InConcert accesses documents and other
information that resides in standard file systems without moving it into
database storage. Third-party software applications that act on existing
business documents, such as spreadsheets and word processors, can be
easily integrated into the overall process, allowing companies to leverage
the value of their existing software application investment.

Easily Customized for Vertical Applications

Using a graphical user environment and object-oriented programming tools,
value-added resellers and system integrators can rapidly develop
customized applications in markets such as publishing, insurance, legal,
wholesale/retail distribution, healthcare, pharmaceutical, aerospace and
government.
