AGE LOGIC AWARDED MIT X IMAGE EXTENSION DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT

San Diego, CA. March 17, 1993 - AGE Logic, Inc. announced that it has been
awarded the X Image Extension (XE) Sample Implementation contract by the
MIT X Consortium. Under the terms of the contract, AGE will implement the
new features and protocols defined in the XE draft standard, version 4.12,
for X Window servers. XE will be incorporated into the next release of the
X Window System (X11R6) which defines the standards for all X Window
applications and X servers.

The new X Image Extension (XIE) was initiated to address the demand for
faster and more sophisticated image processing by the X Window System. XE
accomplishes this by compressing the image on the host system (e.g., a
Unix workstation), and then decompressing the image on the display server
side (e.g., a PC, X terminal, or any X-capable hardware). This
compression/decompression mechanism significantly reduces the volume of
data which is transferred across the network and can result in compression
ratios of 20:1 or better. XIE further increases performance by enabling
the X server on the display device to scale, rotate and flip images, as
well as execute simple enhancement operations such as contrast
enhancement. This not only reduces network traffic, but dramatically
decreases the time required to re-display the enhanced or scaled image.
The X Image Extension also supports geometric operations which render
images to accommodate the capabilities of the display system.

AGE's sample implementation will also include DIS, the Document Imaging
Subset of XIE. Designed to meet the requirements of the bitonal document
imaging market, DIS requires less resources, such as memory, for
applications that do not require photographic-quality image support.
However, because DIS is a proper subset of XIE, developers will have the
assurance that applications written for DIS will also be fully compatible
with XIE.

"We believe that XE will be the most significant addition to the X Window
System to date," said Peter J. Shaw, president/CEO for AGE. "Imaging is
one of the most important elements involved in the transmission of data,
so there is a great demand for the efficient transfer and presentation of
imaging information in almost every industry. As a long-standing member of
the X community, AGE is pleased to offer our expertise and development
resources towards the advancement of XIE."

The development contract, valued at $500,000, was issued to implement
standards approved by the X Consortium and specified in the X Image
Extension (XE) Protocol draft standard. The contract was awarded after a
bidding and review process conducted by the X Consortium during December
and January.

"I'm very pleased with the quality and experience of the AGE team," said
Robert Scheifler, director of the X Consortium, "and I'm confident that
they will produce a high quality implementation."

AGE Logic, Inc., a privately owned corporation founded in 1984, is a
supplier of X Window System software that enables PCs, terminals,
workstations and embedded systems to access X applications residing on
Unix-based hosts. Marketed under the XoftWare brand name, AGE offers a
full family of PC packaged products for distributors/resellers, systems
integrators and OEMs, as well as customized embedded X products for the
world's leading terminal, computer and systems companies. XoftWare
packaged products support industry standards such as Microsoft Windows,
DOS, TIGA, 8514, and Unix. AGE has alliances with major silicon, terminal,
and workstation companies to develop highly optimized, hardware-specific X
servers tailored to their specifications.
