U.S. ROBOTICS DOUBLES DENSITY OF TOTAL CONTROL CHASSIS
WITH DUAL V.32 BIS MODEM CARDS
Upgradable to CCITT 28.8 Kbps Standard (V.FAST)

SKOKIE, Ill., -- March 10, 1993 -- U. S. Robotics today announced the
release and shipment of Total Control dual-card modems and Total Control
Version 3.0 software. With the support of the dual modems, U.S. Robotics
doubles the number of modems it can manage in each Total Control chassis.
The standard 16-slot rack will now hold 32 modems. Total Control's
enhanced software version includes advanced security features, expanded
monitoring and reporting capabilities, and support for the dual modem
cards.

Total Control, U.S. Robotics' intelligent management system for data
centers, centralizes network monitoring, configuring, security access and
management in a single, easy-to-use system--bringing network managers one
step closer to a completely automated network. Through its unique Auto
Response feature, Total Control can identify and respond to equipment
problems without operator intervention.

Total Control Reduces Modem Cost Per Channel By increasing the chassis
density, U.S. Robotics effectively reduces the cost per channel by
allowing the user to amortize the chassis controller and software over
more modem channels. Pricing ranges from $2850 for a Total Control Dual
Standard to $1295 for a Total Control 2400.

As with U.S. Robotics Courier modems and Shared Access LAN connectivity
devices, all Total Control dual modems are upgradable to the
CCITT-proposed 28.8 Kbps (V.FAST) standard as soon as the recommendation
is completed. Official approval is expected in the first quarter of 1994.
Field upgrades will be available for $299 per high-speed modem channel.
Total Control 2400 modems can be upgraded to 28.8 Kbps for $475 per modem
channel. By offering modems ready for 28.8 Kbps now, U.S. Robotics is
providing insurance against technical obsolescence. Customers can purchase
a Total Control modem now and take advantage of the most updated
technology available. When the 28.8 Kbps standard is approved, Total
Control users will have a cost-effective upgrade option and won't have to
reinvest in new equipment.

"Key to the 28.8 Kbps program is the fact that the upgrade to the Total
Control modems can be done by the end user at their worksite--reducing
"down" time and eliminating shipping and handling costs," said Jonathan
Zakin, executive vice president, sales and marketing. "Our unique modem
architecture makes future "field" upgrades a realistic and simple
procedure."

Total Control Version 3.0 Enhancements The following list highlights Total
Control 3.0 feature enhancements:

Remote Login

* Allows the system operator to define remote sites from the Total Control
console. To make the remote site connection, the operator pulls up the
Remote Login menu, selects the site. Then Total Control dials the number
and makes the connection.

ASCII Script Generation

* ASCII scripts or macros can be written to automate many network
management functions. ASCII scripts, initiated through Auto Response, can
dial a system operator's beeper or a remote PC if an alarm occurs, like a
power supply or modem failure.

Remote Stand-alone Modem Configuration

* Allows the system operator to easily configure remote stand-alone modems
by writing an ASCII script. ASCII scripts containing an AT command
configuration string can be sent to one or more remote modems either
manually or automatically.

Export Log to ASCII Flat Files

* Any Total Control log can be exported to an ASCII flat file and imported
into any off-the-shelf database for custom reports. Reports such as, modem
utilization or alarm summary can be created using the log information.

Establish Session with Modem

* From the Total Control console, system operators can now send messages
out to any remote/local modem user. Operators can also dial any
asynchronous service (e.g. the USR bulletin board) from the Total Control
console.

Dial-back Security Enhancements

* The system operator can now configure our Dial Security feature to make
multiple dial-back attempts to ensure that all calls get connected.
