SPA Announces Excellence in Software Awards Winners 
Annual "Codies" Presented at SPA Conference

March 5, 1993 (San Diego, CA) -- High tech went Hollywood last night at the
1993 Software Publishers Association (SPA) Excellence in Software Awards,
"the Oscars" of the software industry.

The SPA, the primary trade association of the personal computer software
industry, handed out its highly coveted "Codie" Awards for the best
consumer, education, and business software of 1992. SPA members voted for
the winners in 25 categories from a total of 521 nominations

"The scope of entries in the 1993 Codie Awards bodes well for the software
industry and for the nation as a whole," says Ken Wasch, executive
director of the SPA. "The innovation, intelligence and sheer imagination
crystallized in the Codie-winning products are simply astonishing. These
products will enhance the way we all work, live and learn."

Three products were winners in multiple categories, including KidDesk by
Edmark Corporation (Best Educational Tool and Best User Interface in a New
Program); Morph by Gryphon Software Corporation (Best Business
Application: Graphic or Display and Best Personal Creativity Program) and
Quicken 2.0 for Windows by Intuit (Best Consumer Program and Best Personal
Productivity Program).

In addition, six companies received honors for multiple products, including
Borland International, Inc., for Quattro Pro for Windows 1.0 (Best New
Business Software Product) and Borland C++ and Applications Frameworks 3.1
(Best Programming Tool); Br0derbund Software, Inc., for Just Grandma and
Me (Best Overall Education Program) and Where in the USA is Carmen
Sandiego? Deluxe Edition (Best Home Learning Program); Edmark Corporation,
for Millie's Math House (Best Early Education Program) and KidDesk (Best
Educational Tool Program ) and (Best User Interface in a New Program);
Knowledge Adventure, Inc., for Dinosaur Adventure (DOS) (Best Elementary
Education Program) and Space Adventure (DOS) ( Best Secondary Education
Program); Maxis for SimLife (Best Simulation Program) and A-Train (Best
Strategy Program); and Microsoft Corporation for Microsoft Project 3.0
(Best Vertical Market Application) and Microsoft Excel, Version 4.0 (Best
Business Application: Graphic or Display).

Critics' Choice Awards, selected by members of the press, were presented
for Best Business Program, Best Consumer Program, and Best Education
Program. Adobe Premiere 2.0 by Adobe Systems, Inc. won the Critics' Choice
Award for Best Business Program. Stunt Island: The Stunt Flying and
Filming Simulation by Disney Software won the Critics' Choice Award for
Best Consumer Program. Interactive Physics II by Knowledge Revolution
captured the Critics' Choice Award for Best Education Program.

Comedian Paula Poundstone presided over the black-tie ceremony attended by
over 1100 software industry executives. The evening was a highlight of the
SPA's Annual Spring Symposium, held in San Diego. Poundstone regaled the
crowd with a variety of jokes, often spoofing the software industry.
