NEC UNVEILS ENTIRE FAMILY OF MULTISPIN CD-ROM READERS:
New Readers Have MultiSpin and Multisession Technology

Wood Dale, Ill., February 15, 1993 -- Building on the phenomenal success of
its proprietary MultiSpin technology, which first doubled the data
transfer speed of CD-ROM readers, NEC Technologies, Inc. today launched
the complete MultiSpin family of CD-ROM readers. Each member of the NEC
MultiSpin family of readers, including the new MultiSpin 38 portable
CD-ROM reader, is equipped with a host of features, including 300KB/second
data transfer rates, SCSI 2 settings and Multisession Kodak Photo CD M
capabilities.

The NEC MultiSpin family of CD-ROM readers includes the MultiSpin 38
(portable), the MultiSpin 74 (external) and 84 (internal) CD-ROM readers.
NEC's versatile multi-platform interface kits allow NEC CD-ROM readers to
be attached to both IBM PC compatible, Macintosh and PS/2 computers. Users
can also connect their readers to portable computers with NEC's
Parallel-to-SCSI Interface Kit, which brings added versatility and
powerful multimedia computing to portable computers.

"Until we introduced MultiSpin technology last year, CD-ROM computing was
not considered a completely viable technology because of its slow speed,"
explained Marc Miller, vice president and general manager of NEC's
Advanced Media Group. "MultiSpin changed the way users looked at CD-ROM
computing by erasing the speed objection. To continue our leadership in
the marketplace, we have taken our award-winning MultiSpin technology and
added several other useful features to make the MultiSpin family of CD-ROM
readers the most multimedia capable yet."

The NEC MultiSpin 38 -- Making MultiSpin CD-ROM Computing Portable

As the first shipping light-weight portable CD-ROM reader with a
300KB/second data transfer rate, the MultiSpin 38 portable CD-ROM reader
has the power of a standard desktop dual-speed CD-ROM reader. Not only
does it have the technology necessary to run demanding multimedia
applications, but the MultiSpin 38 has a small footprint and weighs only
2.2 pounds (without battery), providing the most multimedia computing
power-per-pound on the market. Its optional battery pack, changeable SCSI
1 and SCSI 2 settings and switchable termination feature bring added
flexibility to CD-ROM computing.

In addition to its speedy 300KB/second data transfer rate, the MultiSpin 38
is Multisession Kodak Photo CD capable and sports an average access time
of 400 milliseconds. Another important feature is its flow-through cache
memory of 64KB, which provides smooth motion video by eliminating the
information bottleneck and allowing data to flow immediately to the
screen.

"The launch of the MultiSpin 38 marks the first time the power of a
300KB/second data transfer rate has been made portable," explained Miller.
"Many of our customers take CD-ROM computing on the road to give
presentations to their clients and keep large amounts of information
easily accessible. As the company that pioneered mobile computing with the
first UltraLite computer, we are dedicated to giving mobile professionals
the power and flexibility they demand -- The MultiSpin 38 continues in
that tradition."

The MultiSpin 74 and 84 Offer Added Features

The MultiSpin 74 external and MultiSpin 84 internal CD-ROM readers contain
the same award winning technology that established NEC as the CD-ROM
leader last year. With an access time of 280 milliseconds and a data
transfer rate of 300 KB/second, the MultiSpin 74 and 84 have the power and
speed to handle all CD-ROM applications with ease.

In addition, the MultiSpin 74 and 84 are Multisession Kodak Photo CD
capable and offer changeable SCSI 1 and SCSI 2 settings, socketed
firmware, double doors for added dust protection and a 256K cache memory,
big enough to handle any current multimedia application.

A Brief History of NEC's MultiSpin Technology

As the first company to double the data transfer rate from 150 to
300KB/second last year, NEC called its breakthrough proprietary technology
"MultiSpin" in reference to the two speeds the readers transfer different
types of data.

For instance, the technology gives the new MultiSpin 38, 74 and 84 the
ability to transfer data at 300KB/second when retrieving text, graphics
and video information from a disc. When playing only audio information,
however, the readers automatically adjust to transfer the sound at
150KB/second to preserve the intended sound quality.

NEC's MultiSpin readers can transfer twice as much data as readers that
have only a 150KB/second data transfer rate. This additional speed
provides smooth motion video from a CD, eliminating the annoying time lags
that were once associated with CD-ROM computing.

Warranty, Shipping, Upgrade and Pricing Information

The new MultiSpin 38, 74 and 84 CD-ROM readers all come with an aggressive
two-year warranty, making them some of the best supported CD-ROM readers
on the market today.

The entire new family of MultiSpin readers begin shipping immediately and
can be purchased through NEC's nationwide network of authorized dealers.

In addition, the MultiSpin 74 can be purchased as part of NEC's Multimedia
Gallery, a complete multimedia solution with CD-ROM reader, speakers,
sound card and six premium software titles.

Users who purchased the InterSect CDR-74, CDR-84 and CDR-37 and require an
upgrade to read the Multisession Kodak Photo CD format, can send their
working readers to NEC and receive a new MultiSpin/Multisession reader
back. The reader exchange program costs $249 for the CDR-74, $229 for the
CDR-84 and $179 for the CDR-37. End users can find out more detailed
information about the upgrade program by calling 1-800/388-8888.
